I got into all 3 schools:
Biomed Eng in UoM and Boston and UoToronto in Materials Eng (didn’t get into the BioSci - no biomed eng as a major avail).

My first choice major is Biomed Eng. Can you please give me your thoughts on these universities? Cost aside, just on program, facilities and reputation, etc.

Thanks.

if you are sure you want to do biomedical engineering, BU is a very good place to do it since it is in - well - boston, which is the epicenter of the biotechnology/ biomedical world in the US. And it is great if you are also thinking of becoming a doctor - since the pathway and city mesh well (ENGMEDIC program is very helpful).

U of M is overall a GREAT school with a GREAT engineering program and I would definitely go there if you aren’t sure you want to do biomedical engineering. All of its engineering degrees are highly respected and it is in a beautiful location. Its an overall good school, so your pathway is free. As “reputable” as BU apparently is for biomedical engineering - it is not highly ranked in its other engineering programs (though rankings are pointless anyways - it should depend on the person him/herself if the school is a good fit).

Haven’t heard too much from Toronto (I don’t really look too much at Canadian schools except for McGill and such -=() So I can’t really tell you anything here.

I would definitely consider money though because that would probably be the deciding factor imho between the schools. I know U of M is expensive and so is BU - so whoever gave you more aid and scholarships should definitely play a part in your decision.

Know very little about Toronto except that it’s absolutely huge and much of it is a commuter school. Michigan is a terrific school, very good in engineering, one of the largest research dollar recipients. BU is very strong in biomed. If you search ASEE.org, go to publications and then look on the left for search, you’ll see that they’re reasonably close in total research dollars for biomed. In total though, BU is considered Tier 1 but UM is in the super tier in total research dollars. You can see in the profiles how faculty, etc. is allocated.

You need to think about where you want to live. I live in Boston, used to live in Ann Arbor. Both are great places, but quite different.

Thanks for your feedback. I omitted cost as a factor just to get the fact comparisons. As an international student, there is no financial aid, unfortunately. BU is 9k more than UM, so yes, cost is becoming a factor in my decision.

I will be visiting the campuses in the next couple of weeks and I also should be finding out about scholarships (that is applicable to Cdns) at UM on Apr 15 (according to the fin aid counselor). I think BU has already given out theirs, unless they only send it in the package (which I have yet to receive). It was not in my email.
