Bowling Green State University MT?

Anyone have any info on BGSU MT at all? I'm truly interested in the program! :)

We visited BGSU a couple years ago when my D was a junior (college freshman now). They have a very nice theatre facility. We did a generic school tour in the morning then met with a couple theatre professors in the afternoon and they gave everyone a tour. (I don’t remember their names at the moment). We did not have the opportunity to see a show, so can’t comment on their productions.

One thing about BGSU is that their degree is a Bachelor of Arts in Communication (BAC), so some of the degree requirements are a bit different than a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA). Because of this it seems the number required theatre classes are fewer than most BFA programs. The professor said this was an intentional decision because they felt a good actor needed experience outside of theatre and they felt the non-theatre classes helped provide that experience. Not sure if that really is a big deal or not, but it was one thing my D didn’t like. But if you have some AP credits from high school, I think BGSU has plenty of theatre classes that you can add to your schedule.

When we spoke with the professors it sounded like they have connections to NYC and professional performers. I don’t remember a lot of the details, but I got the impression they could provide good training and experience. How would that compare with some of the big name schools? Who knows, but I believe school is what you make of it and I think they have enough to provide for most people.

As far as numbers auditioning, again I don’t remember the exact numbers, but they did say numbers of people auditioning were increasing over the past few years, just like other schools. I think they said they took something like 15-20 people into the program and while a few years ago they saw as few as 50-60 people audition, they were expecting over 200 for last year’s audition. Again don’t take those as exact numbers, but the proportional growth was along those lines.

My D got serious about MT once she got into HS, so she was somewhat late to the game. My impression was that BGSU would have been a good school for someone like her. I don’t think they were targeting the same people as the top schools, However, she eliminated it because of the BAC and she didn’t like look of the campus (which is subjective, my wife and I thought it was fine), so I can’t share anything about their actual audition process.

My impression (as a parent) was that it is a good, viable program. If you are interested in the program then I encourage you to reach out to them, take a visit, etc. It may not be a “big name” school, but they do have a long history in theatre and it might be in the right place for you.

@raellis123 Thanks, that helps a ton!

And, since it is a state university, if you are from Ohio, it may be a very affordable choice.

Yes, that’s true, it can be an affordable choice. We live in OH, which was another reason I wanted my daughter to look at it. But even if you live out of state their costs are pretty good.
