Like all of us, the Common app (at least the one online) doesn’t have enough room for all our ECs. I do 3 Varsity sports, but for one of them I only made Varsity my junior year, so I don’t think its worth listing in that precious space. I do Box (outside of school) and I’ve done decent. Should I put this on there, or would an admissions officer likely imagine someone who enjoys boxing as violent, unsympathetic, dumb, agressive and harmful. I mean Mike Tyson hasn’t exactly improved the image someone conjures up when thinking of the sterotypical boxer. So should I just go with the banal high schooler who finally cracks a varsity team thier junior year, or should I stick with the boxing, or forget both alltogether?
Thanks

list whatever is most important to you. If that's boxing, list boxing. (Cinderella Man may have replaced some of the images of Mike Tyson in the popular mind)

One of this year's seniors did very well with his major EC being JROTC - which could be construed as militaristic but was not. Better to be yourself, as Texas says.

hey sorry don't mean to take over your thread.. but another quick question .. if you did 1 year of a sport and didn't really enjoy it, and don't plan to do it in the future, should you mention it? the sport was in freshman year and i didn't really know anything

list your most important activities - if 1 year of a sport you weren't any good at was your only activity, you should list it. If you have 10 other things that were more important to you, leave it out.

alright thanks texas

Well this is a no brainer. (pun intended). I think the boxing shows critical thinking skills for admissions...

Are you sure the Common App online does not have room? It seems I recall that there is additional space, beyond the table itself, for further explanation of ECs. In completing the table, if you don't have space to list each sport, try to lump some related activiites together and then use a footnote to further explain the improtance of some of them, especially your boxing - you should have ample room to explain your involvement to your advantage - ie to show your dedication, perserverence, ability to pursue something outside the usual realm of varsity sports and take it to a high level..... It doesn't have to come off negative.

Adcoms often remember applicants by a two word description--yours can be the flute-playing boxer (or whatever your first descriptor may be. I think it's a plus and definitely worth an essay.
