I'm a boy who takes ballet at the pre-professional level and I was wondering if this would greatly help my chance at admission to schools. I understand I must maintain a good gpa and have competitive sat scores, however being unique in this regard should help my chances right?

Yes, it certainly can help.

I know that there is really no way anyone can tell me my odds of getting into a college besides the college admissions board at the school that receives my application, but would an extra-curricular such as this help to get me in, even if my test scores are not good enough? My dream is to go to Princeton, and they have a decent ballet program, so my chances should increase in that aspect because they probably need guys. However, if my Sat score is a 2080 with a gpa of 96, could this help outweigh my academics?

Being a boy in dance will have all of the schools wanting you. If you want Princeton, I would contact the dance dept. and audition. That will help your chances. If it is between you and an unkown, they will choose you. The dance dept will send over their reccommendations to admissions. Good Luck!

Rickys - I have no experience with P’ton so I cannot give definitive advice, but I would imagine your gender advantage would hold more sway at a school with a dance major rather than at a school that has dance only as an extracurricular activity. If so, maybe Duke would be a better reach school for you.

I agree with cltdad. If you are applying to a school as a dance major, then yes, they’ll love that you’re a guy. Otherwise, it’s just a mildly interesting thing about you.
