I am a UW alum. Two of my kids have also attended Washington. We were all Greek, and all had overwhelmingly positive experiences with it. However...that was a while ago. And now we have a neighbor--we are OOS--who is headed to Seattle and contemplating a frat. Because of the logistical problems of an OOS kid trying to see the Greek system and attend guys rush in the summer, he is thinking of waiting a year before rushing. In my day, there wasn't a lot of that. Almost everyone pledged as a freshman. Sophomores rushees were, of course, welcome, but somewhat rare and missed so much of what bound the class together initially.
I'm not sure what to tell him. Make the effort, bear the expense to go to Seattle this summer..or wait until sophomore year? Does anyone with DIRECT knowledge know if rushing as a sophomore is any more common now than it used to be? Would love to hear your thoughts, as he is uncertain about how to approach this. Thanks in advance.

I'm from NorCal too. From what I've heard is that a lot of people rush freshman year and it is the way to go. It might be too late but he could've done early fall start and rushed during then. I've just been up for orientation and saw a few fraternities then and got a bid.

I wouldn't wait till sophomore year, but I know people who do and they end up being fine; but honestly, I'd recommend doing it now.
