Greek Life

I’ve been going back and forth on whether or not I should consider rushing as a freshman.

For current students, how prominent is greek life on campus? If you are part of a sorority/fraternity, would you recommend rushing to an out-of-state person?

For admitted students who are planning to attend, are you considering being a part of the greek scene? What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

Are you male or female? The rush process is different and could definitely influence your decision. An OOS guy can rush informally whenever he arrives in Seattle, during an orientation visit, or even after classes start. Most sorority bids are given during formal rush, so women need to factor in that rush decision as part of their overall moving plan.

UW is a huge, diverse school with Greeks being just one element that’s not really in your face if you’re not interested.

If you’re an outgoing person who makes friends easily, you won’t necessarily need to be Greek to make plenty of connections, but it provides a lot more opportunity because you move into a house with dozens of people who are looking to be your friend. You will literally have people reaching out to walk to campus with you and make sure you find where you’re going. That’s a positive for some and creepy to others.

So, you have to think about yourself and your goals for socializing in college. Super social people will make it work wherever. Less social people could benefit from the nudge and support of a Greek house. Total introverts will probably go crazy living in a fraternity or sorority (I did)

Do you have to live in a house to be in a fraternity? What if I wanted to live in the dorms freshman year and then the house the other 3 years.

How are the houses as far as cleanliness and just general living situation?

How intense is it being a pledge? I know it depends on the fraternity but just in general.
