Braces

Did any of your sons or daughters have braces and have to get them removed to go to a service academy? It turns out my braces are expected to be removed January 2007... I read on the dodmerb remedial sheet that I can't have braces when going to a service academy or entering an ROTC program. If I end up doing ROTC, will I have to get my braces off prior to showing up to college, or by "ROTC program" do they mean field training, which is way after i get them off?

I hope I dont have to get them off early and not get the whole treatment :(

Taffy - according to this site
<a href="http://www.west-point.org/academy/malo-wa/medical/Dental.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.west-point.org/academy/malo-wa/medical/Dental.html</a>
you would not have to have your braces removed early. Best to check with the academy though - things may have changed since this was written.

Also talk to your specialist for that person can modify the treatment program for you.....I did that for a specific event and it was not a problem.

Taffy - Hope things are going well for you. When you get into where you want to go, keep those braces. You can always call me to come get them off with my trusty channel locs if they give you any flack about it. :) And if you end up with a retainer, don't accidently throw it in the trash after chow. What a nightmare!

ive seen it happen at basic!

The AFA made it very clear at our orientation meeting that your son or daughter could not show up with braces (metal or invisilign) Parents were told at the meeting to make sure that your child's braces were removed before they reported for inprocessing.

interesting. I'm applying to USCGA, USMMA, and USMA. Sounds like for west point I'm fine, but what about CGA and MMA? anybody hear about those? or rotc?

I saw a girl just this weekend with braces at the CGA...so I think you're ok.

Taffy. No worries. Channel locs. I know how to use them. Why pay your dentist good parent money to take them off. Give me about five minutes. Good to go.

I understand that you have a son at KP, but what does a lock in a channel have to do with anything?

<a href="http://www.technojunkie.org/berniec/galleries/seattle/locks/ship_coming_into_lock.jpg%5B/url%5D">http://www.technojunkie.org/berniec/galleries/seattle/locks/ship_coming_into_lock.jpg</a></p>

:-P

"Taffy. No worries. Channel locs."

You would be surprised at how close to the truth that is.

Taffy,
My brother had a similar issue in that he needed to rush his time in braces. Our orthodontist put him on an every two week appointment schedule and was more "aggressive" than usual. Read that to mean, lots of Tylenol!!! However, it is possible. You've still got time. I would go talk to your ortho guy right now. Good luck.

A boat in a lock in a channel; Channelock. Now that's funny! And I can visualize Jamzmom kneeling on someone's chest with an evil gleam in her eye.

ROTC is less enforced with the process, idt you need to get your braces taken out for them. Good luck!!

Visualize Jamzmamma as just shaking her head at Taffy's post. That kid can find humor in the most unusual ways! :) I wouldn't actually kneel on Taffy's chest. I'll need to remain standing for the procedure. I'll just put a boot to his throat and PULL. Should work fine.

A cadet visited my school last week and he said that cadets have braces and he had the option to get braces for free from west point! I think I'm safe with them. Still gotta find out about USMMA...
