Brag, Brag, Brag, Part II

freelance, I'm going the week before Easter - April 9-13th.

And thank you everyone for all the advice!

Was anyone at the Washington State Thespian Conference this weekend? My school had a ton of people in the IE showcase, it was so much fun! Thespians is so great...

He's not going to ever post this, so I will do it for him...:)

TheatreJock (who posted his acceptances so far earlier today) truly IS a theatre JOCK - an all-state football player (whose team made it to the state finals this year before losing a heartbreaker) and all-conference baseball player. So many of our kids here have such unique backgrounds, and I know many of your love reading their stories, so I wanted to share his. But don't think he hasn't worked his butt off at theatre just as much as he has at sports - I've seen it firsthand, and I, and many others, are SO proud of him!!! :) :) :)

TheatreJock's "TheatreMom,"
CoachC

P.S. Right now he's a varsity starting pitcher by afternoon and Marius in Les Miz by night. :)

My D (PSUCat) and I had the opportunity to meet "theatreJock" at his PSU audition. He was charming, personable and obviously talented! Congrats to him on his acceptances so far and on doing double duty with athletics and the stage.

Bit of a pet peeve.....probably shouldn't even bring it up.... but

I assume everyone on here, or whose parents are reporting in about them, is talented! I"ve never felt comfortable labelling anyone as "talented" (vs not talented, I guess?), very talented, exceptionally talented, or anything else. All of our kids are talented.

I love when kids break out of stereotypical groups at school and try things "in another category". When my daughter did Something's Afoot at school in January one of the school wrestlers was cast opposite her. Not only is he a good actor, he hoisted her up on his shoulders with ease a couple times during the show. So many times it is the "drama geeks" (at my D's school, the kids label themselves that way) who do every show. When kids with other outside interests get involved it makes the show more reflective of the whole campus.

Chrism,

Believe me, I hear you. But I don't really think that when anyone posts here about their child, another child or even some performer that they don't know personally being some degree of "talented" that they are trying to create a competitive "good, better, best" dynamic. They, myself included, are proud of their children and who better to believe in their children's talents than their own family. I know this is a stressful time for everyone awaiting the mail and this has been a difficult journey for you and your D. But hopefully much good news is coming your way. Please don't take offense. It is my belief that when artistry of any kind begins to be thought of as a competitive event, no one wins.

And lastly, this IS the "Brag, Brag, Brag" thread........if it's not safe/okay here, then where?

chrism...
so very true! We all have our stories. Not only are all of these kids talented (that is too obvious, I think!) but I think that they are amazing young people who have accomplished so very much by just going through the process they have just finished!!!!!!!! I am pretty sure that if every person going into college had to go through the process these young people did, well, there would not be nearly as many going to college!! I am not undermining what theatrejock has accomplished...it is truly amazing and you should be proud!! (Our school has a lot of "jocks" involved in our music programs...it seems to amaze some of my family...sports and music...so I personally LOVED hearing this!) But, all of you out there auditoning, performing, working, perfoming, doing sports, perfoming, and keeping your grades up...oh, and performing are amazing! You all deserve a standing O...now, help me down off of this soap box!

Theatermom, I really wasn't taking any personal offense at all. I was just philosophically objecting to describing anyone here as "talented". Because they all are. And many kids have many reasons to brag, brag, brag - and this thread is the place to do it!

I was just saying it doesn't make sense to characterize anyone here as talented - because they all are! [That's probably clear as mud but just wanted to assure you I wasn't taking the comment personally. But philosophically. ]

Still need that work crisis! where is it !! :-)

Disney just did a (not very good, imo, but fun) TV movie musical about this very theme (high school kids who usually don't do theater becoming involved, with great results) called "High School Musical." My MT daughter was somewhat scornful of the music and acting in it, but admitted that if it makes Disney Channel viewers think about musicals, it's a good thing. Someone told me that the CD soundtrack is a top seller. The plot concerns a brother and sister team who usually dominate their high school's musicals being unseated by a new girl (a mathlete!) and a basketball star, who, for their own reasons, try out for the school musical. I am sure that some of you have seen it.

L

I, personally, thought it was very cute. Not an Emmy winner, but cute!

Today my S got his first pair of dance shoes. He's more of a straight acting kid, so hasn't really needed dance shoes. The role of Puck in MSND and first dance class has brought him to the conclusion that he needed these shoes.

Now for the brag . . .
His schedule precluded a trip to the dance store. So, my manly-man husband volunteered to purchase them and to be his fit model. They wear the same size shoe. So hubby has learned what split sole jazz shoes are all about.

What we won't do for our kids!!!!!

Wow Elliottsmom, that guy is a keeper!!!!

I wonder if I can send my hubby to pick up the next pair of pointe shoes??? LOL
(once he did take my D to get fitted out of town for a pair....that already seemed like a big deal to me but your story is WAY better!)

congrats on the role of Puck...great role!

I have a brag that I wanted to share. Today my daughter received a superior rating at the North Carolina Thespian Festiva for solo voice performance. She also received the highest score at the competition in that category! I am so proud of her and just wanted to share it with some people who would understand!!!

CONGRATULATIONS! What a great accomplishment for her - I bet you're beaming!

Kaysmom, yippee for your D! She is clearly a standout and I hope this helps her with some affirmation of her talents as she goes forward into the college process. We don't have these thespian competitions and what not that many on here write about but I think it sounds really like fantastic opportunities. Enjoy this very special moment. Tell her we all send a BIG congrats and yes, we surely DO understand the meaningfulness of this achievement.

Whoo Hoooo!!! Kickin'

Thanks for your kind words and yes, I just saw my typo...it's festival...not festiva.

Sorry was excited and not checking my post thoroughly. :-)

kaysmom - Congratulations! That's really awesome news!
