Branch Campus worth it?

Got accepted to Newark. How is the college life? Anyone been able to early transfer from Newark or Marion Branch? Ive been reading on here about people who were able to take half there classes at Ohio State Main? I talked to a Newark advisor and they said that is not possible? I live like 10 miles from the Delaware branch of Columbus state, is that also apart of the Ohio State Marion Campus? Im trying to see if its worth the hassle to go to a branch campus or go to a different college.

My daughter went to OSU Marion Delaware Campus summer semester taking classes there and online, and then split her time between OSU Marion Delaware and OSU Main Campus fall semester. She had a Fantastic advisor at the branch who told her about the option of splitting time on both campuses after completing her first semester at the branch. She actually never set foot in a classroom in Marion. She has since met several students who are
commuting to Newark from Main campus area who told her that they were not permitted to take classes on Main campus. I guess that is just a Newark thing. It was not a big deal for her going to Delaware - she commuted there from home in the summer and a the beginning of Fall Semester we moved her to an apt on campus. The time went by very fast and she is happily enrolled full time at Main campus as of January. She even received a scholarship for the 2 semesters she completed at Marion. It was a great experience. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions! Good Luck!

Hey I’m a current OSU student. I did an early transfer from the Mansfield campus to the main one, so I can give you some insight on the process.

First off, there are two things you need to do an early transfer: a high GPA from your first semester and a legitimate reason. Just wanting to get out of your branch campus early is not a legitimate reason, unfortunately - you need an academic reason. Mine was that I wanted to start courses in my major as early as possible and they weren’t offered in Mansfield.

You’ll have to talk to your Newark campus advisor about this and get his or her approval. After that, your advisor will contact an advisor from your chosen college at Main campus, and that advisor will submit your petition for early transfer to the college committee. The final say-so for this actually comes from the Dean of the college himself or herself, so this kind of thing isn’t taken lightly.

Basically, if you don’t have a legitimate academic reason to early transfer, expect them to deny your petition.

The main benefit of going to the branch campus is you have a guaranteed admission to the main campus after a year. So, if OSU is your dream school, the branch campus really is worth it. The nice thing about doing your first year there is that your first 2 years at OSU are mostly comprised of GE (General Education) courses anyway. At main campus, these courses sometimes have hundreds of students, while others oftentimes are taught by TA’s instead of professors. At branch campuses, you get really small class sizes (30 and below), and all your classes will be taught by a professor.

As for taking some courses in main campus before transferring, that is also something you need to get permission for. Like early transfers, it’s not usually done - and the decisions are settled on a case to case basis.

Let me know if you have questions!
