I don't think it's worth responding to him, me?...

me2,

So why is Turkey having such a difficult time trying to join the EU?

quote from Wikipedia, "However, due to its religious and cultural differences, Turkey faces strong opposition from governments of some member states, including France, Germany, Austria, Greece, Cyprus and Slovenia. "

How come there was that riot in France last year because the French isolated the immigrants?

"Ph3onix, he did say her MIT degree was worthless because she's female, in another thread, just for clarification."

No I did not. I only said employers tend to look down slightly on female MIT resumes. Not every employers obviously, but some. It's sad, just like employers are sometimes racist too. There was a study done where they sent out like 5000 resume with identical qualifications but different names. It turned "white" names like "Greg" or "Neil" got a lot more responses than black names like "Tyrone".

It's sad. But it's not going to change unless we kill affirmative action.

With no affirmative action, people can be proud of their MIT degrees regardless of their race/gender. It's also fair to all those qualified female/minority students that deserved their MIT degree.

We cannot have equality unless we make everything equal. And affirmative action is standing in the way.

Nothing like a healthy batch of racism, sexism, and downright lies about hiring practices to win over MIT students and admissions officers.

Good job, joejia, you're doing well.

Indeed, Gracie, I was thinking the same thing.

I know a lot of so-so female students that got into MIT and everyone was bewildered. Then I know a lot of awesome males that got rejected and everyone was so shocked. I guess that's how I formed my conclusion.
[/quote]
Then your conclusions are formed on specious anecdotal incidents and not on facts. You know nothing of what the Admissions staff is considering in their decision, and have not read the recommendations nor applications from all of these students, so you have no access to the relevant facts.

Cite your sources for this contention, and sorry, anecdotal incidents ("I know someone who...") won't do. I've been a hiring manager, and I have always been impressed by an MIT resume, regardless of the color, shape, or gender of the person presenting it.

While I am not an expert on the matter, I believe Caltech may look somewhat differently at the numbers on an application when making admissions decisions. Perhaps you'd be more happy there than at MIT. (Sorry, Gracie, not meaning to send trouble your way! ;) )

GracieLegend, why would I need to win over admission officers when I'm already in MIT?

Secondly, I wasn't lying about anything. The human mind is a complex thing and what we hear and see on the surface doesn't always reflect what people thinks in their heart.

There ARE discrimination at the hiring process, even though the employer might look "nice" and "politically correct" on the surface.

Just look at this CBS report:

We never know if we are discriminated by anything on our resume. We can't read mind. But judging by the fact that tons of people think MIT is so easy on women, don't be surprised if there are some employers who think the same too.

Yeah, I'm with Gracie.

Frankly, part of being a scientist (or an intelligent human being, for that matter) is learning not to uncritically swallow statements by "experts", even if the opinions proffered by said "experts" are very comforting and reinforce the idea that white males are at the top of the evolutionary chain of being. Question everything.

One big question that arises when you're talking about scores on IQ tests -- what exactly do they measure? Do they measure some concrete thing in your head... or do they measure familiarity with IQ-style tests? The answer many people arrive at when examining the evidence is that the latter is true (immigrants' IQ scores, for example, rise significantly after they've been in America for several years, indicating that what's being tested is familiarity with the test).

Same goes for SAT scores. I got a 1430 (690M, 740V) on the SAT. Four years later (after extensive studying), I got a 1540 (800M, 740V) in the GRE. Am I really that much better at mathematical reasoning? (Have I even done a geometry problem since junior year of high school?) Nope. Just studied more.

Ben Jones has said before that somewhere around 70% of the MIT applicant pool is qualified to be here. The art in admissions lies in picking the 15ish% of applicants who would be happiest at MIT. (And just because you personally don't see the merit in a given applicant... well, frankly I don't think that means much.)

One more thing -- I'll call BS on joejia being an MIT student. If you're an MIT student, prove it.

He's probably a new admit to have just discovered this forum. 2010 pride!

Mollie, why would I lie about being a MIT student? It doesn't matter if you don't believe me.

Do you really think I'm naive enough to give away my real identity here in this public forum? As far as I'm concerned, you could very well be some campus dean that's trying to take disciplinary action against me because of something I've said.

And by the same token, you could easily be a troll with no better intent than to stir up a negative discussion.

Seems to me there's little point to continuing this thread.

just answer a couple of questions ;)

1) What was the last re-use email sent?

2) What is the logo in the top left corner of your online websis grade report?

3) What does Sadoway do during the last lecture of 3.091?

4) How often do you have to waive that extended student health insurance thing if you're insured elsewhere?

(umm... there'll be more.)

There is a very smart math guy named Joe Jia who goes to MIT. If the poster is not the real Joe Jia, then all of his posts are slander.

If he's that concerned about giving away his "identity", I'd be shocked that he's dense enough to use his full/real name as a username.

I'm so sick of people seeing a minority/female get accepted to X University over white/male and assuming both applicants were equal in EVERYTHING. Firstly, it's very unlikely, if not impossible, that someone would know EVERYTHING about both applicants (that means stats, recs, ssr, essays, hobbies, indulgences, financial comfort, home life, special circumstances and then some). Even if, by some slight chance, that each person is identical, they probably wouldn't present themselves through their application in the same way. how DARE someone see one person accepted "over" another (which doesn't happen since every app is seen holistically) and assume that it's because of minority status?

joejia:
Just a couple of points. How are Asian Indians simillar to Arabians? The two cultures differ vastly. The Indians date back thousands of years, with the Indus Valley civilization in existance around 3200 BCE. The Arabians, in contrast, were travelling across the east in semi-nomadic tribes. Even in present, the countries are vastly different. The eastern Arabs are typically Muslim, while most Indians are Hindu. The two cultures, as a result, have few similarities and many differences.

I agree with the general tone of this thread; you shouldn't make such claims, especially when you have such little knowledge and can barely support your already-weak assertions with anecdotal evidence.

He's not in the campus directory, unless he's Xiaoming Jia.

A German can feel a lot of affinity toward a French or other European

Uh huh...and every generation or so one European country would overrun another until WWII exhausted every European nation and the U.S. and then-USSR forced them into more or less co-existing. Fifty years of relative tranquillity in Europe is an eyeblink compared to what went on before and yet you paint it as ever being so.

I don't know who you are, but if (as I sense) you are a disgruntled MIT reject maybe you were rejected not because of your race and gender but because of your apalling ignorance of history and of the human condition. MIT may have a reputation as geek friendly, but I bet it's friendly toward geeks who didn't sleep through their history classes.

idk i kinda agree with joejia here. having a section for all of asian and pacific islander is more than a little ridiculous

mootmom: We don't want him. Examining admissions numbers critically is one thing, but stating that his race is intellectually superior to any other, that all MIT women are illiterate buffoons who took the place of an infinitely smarter man, and making up a ridiculous lie about job applications is quite another.

This "joejia" fellow is obviously a frustrated high school applicant that decided to use the real name of an MIT student. This is obvious by the fact that he refuses to share his real name, although his username matches that of a present MIT undergrad. Not to mention his belief that mollie is some vengeful campus dean, although all her information is easily verifiable and accessable by an college student, let alone an MIT one. Or that a current college student wouldn't make a thread from the perspective of a college-bound high school student.

Furthermore, I know the real MIT Joe Jia, and he doesn't even post on this forum, let alone make threads of this sort.

Oops.
