I have an acquaintance who goes to McGill and I vaguely remember him complaining that he got home on the 23rd of Dec, or something like that, because of the scheduling of his finals. How do breaks work at McGill ? When do most students get out or does it always depend on finals? Are the other breaks at the same time as most US colleges (I want to be able to see my friends over breaks)

your winter break will be short. School starts again on January 3rd next year, and you'll be able to go home in december whenever you finish exams (i went home on the 15th). You wont have the same spring break as your friends, because yours will be Reading week which is in february.
The last possible day for finals to end this year is April 30.
All in all, it takes some effort to see your friends from home, but its not impossible.

You spend more time in class at McGill than any other Canadian schools who incidentally spend more time in class than American schools.

McGill gives you a day off for Labour Day, a day off for Canadian Thanksgiving (second Monday of October) and anywhere from a week to three weeks off for Christmas depending on when your exams end. You get a Reading Week in February which is usually preceded by mid-terms or if you're unlucky, FOLLOWED up by midterms. No Spring/March Break. You get Easter off and after that it's exams until April 30th.
