Any Breakthrough teachers over here at Yale?

Haha I founded a Music Department at my branch last year (while a rising senior in high school), and the organization is near and dear to my heart- I plan to continue teaching this summer. Breakthrough represent!

yeah breakthrough represent!!! im teaching in providence this summer (i’m a rising senior!!!) where did you teach?

the organization is phenomenal. i’ve been volunteering for a few years. definitely changed my life.

I know this a fairly old post, but I am very interested in applying to Breakthrough Collaborative this summer. I am a '13 at Davidson College.

How competitive is the application process for those of you who have been through it? What do they expect to see on the application?

DOOOO ITTTT!!! ITS BEYOND FABULOUS / A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE (ew im so cliche)…

it involves a pretty rigorous application and interview process… what site are you interested in? I know a couple people who got denied from my program, the admit rates usually run between 15% - 45% based on the program and the number of teachers who are needed…

Leadership qualities are a must, as is caring for the community and taking some serious initiative. community service experience doesn’t hurt, passion is a great thing to demonstrate, being introspective is good. teaching experience absolutely NOT required

Well being at Davidson, I think my choice locations would either be Atlanta or Washington DC or even Boca Raton (how many can you choose on the application?). There have been students in the past who have taught at those locations. I would like to stay reasonably close however, due to travel expenses. I know it is considered a volunteer experience and I would love the opportunity, but I don’t want it to break me. I am working on my resume right now, preparing for the opening of the application, and am trying to get as many opinions as possible.

Also, what does the application consist of? And only being a freshmen, my transcript would not contain much information, how would this affect me? Or will my high school transcript also be submitted?

i have no idea, I taught as a rising high school senior, so no idea on college transcripts… the application consists of the usual personal information, also has questions about why you want to teach at breakthrough, why you want to work with the low income youth that breakthrough targets. it also requires you to talk about a personal challenge and how you persevered through it (although breakthrough is definitely a challenging program, it probably will not break you unless you really don’t have the personal qualities to work at a breakthrough program. the application also requires you to write a mini lesson plan for your class.

you do get paid (a living stipend really)…but it is like a volunteer experience
i think you can choose up to 10 sites on the application (maybe 5)
i highly reccomend PROVIDENCE, RI…its an unbelievable program
