I recently heard of the wonderful opportunity to teach middle school students called Breakthrough Collaborative, but the time commitment for it is absolutely, well. Time-consuming as heck. I wished I heard about this a lot earlier in my college career, but this summer I need to take two summer classes, as well as work on an independent research project with a professor so I cannot dedicate 12+ hours/day on a single activity.

Well anyways. I would love to have teaching experience in a classroom, not one-on-one tutoring, or the assistant-teacher routine, but the whole "I'm going to be in charge of a class" shebang. Is there anything like that, similar to Breakthrough Coll. (though not too time consuming), that I can apply for during the summer?

Breakthrough is all-consuming (and amazing!), so you are correct to think that you can’t have other obligations like classes and do that. My daughter taught at Breakthrough for 3 summer (2 English, 1 Social Studies), and I help out every year with student selection and teacher hiring. So… if you can’t do it this summer, apply for next summer! Bring your A game to the sample teaching portion if you apply, though – that is what makes/breaks most applicants who get beyond the initial cut.

Other than that… maybe teaching English as a second language? There is a big need for that in our city, and some of the classes are at night. I don’t have a specific organization in mind, though.

By the way, I know every Breakthrough location is a bit different, but the teachers do get paid in our city (I think it was $2,750 last summer).

@intparent I have a rising HS senior currently working on her Breakthrough application for early action. Would it be possible for her to PM you with a few questions?
Sure, no problem. I will say that it is pretty tough for HS seniors to get hired. My kid who got hired probably got a boost because her HS was the schools where the BSP program was held, and I think she probably got a boost from some of the teachers from her HS that knew her. But it is still a good experience to interview, I think, even if she doesn’t end up getting it. But she probably does need a backup plan.
