Bringing a car as a sophomore

Should a sophomore from Austin that lives in a student living facility have a car? I feel that most people stay on campus but what percentage of people bring their cars as sophomores?

What about upperclassman?

Depends. If you’re one to run around town, then yes. If you’re planning on spending all your time on campus, then no. I’m assuming your parents can cart you around if need be?

If you were mine, I’d convert the gargage into an apartment and buy you a car. In the long run that arrangement would be cheaper than the dorms, I’d get a better return in property inprovements, and you’d have a car. Win, win!

How about bringing a car as a freshman? I’ll be three hours from home, and I plan on using my car on the weekends…not to go home constantly, but just to get around…thoughts?

I wouldn’t because it isn’t worth the money. You won’t use your car very often, and you’ll have people wanting to borrow it or bum rides from you all the time.

If you have free/cheap parking included in your rent, maybe, but if you have to buy a permit to park in a garage somewhere I wouldn’t bring your car.

And Psych, most people do NOT stay on campus. Only 20% of UT students stay on campus, and this is largely freshmen. Many people live in West Campus or Riverside. West Campus is within walking distance, and Riverside is on shutle routes or kids drive.

I don’t know what kind of ‘student living facility’ this is, but UT dorms charge over $500 to park on campus overnight for the year. Many apartments come with cheap or free parking, but if it isn’t included I wouldn’t do it. If he’s planning to go visit home every week, for say dinner and laundry, a car may be worth it, but if he won’t use it more often than that I would forget it and have Mom/Dad/siblings drive over to pick them up.

Also, if you plan on pledging, pledges with cars are routinely out at all hours of the day and night running actives around, at least in most chapters. If you don’t want to be the pledge taxi, don’t bring a car or don’t let the actives find out you have one.
