I've been in a heated debate with my parents about this for the past month. Someone please give me some feedback as to whether I should or should not take my car.

Do you plan to go home for the weekend often? The car would make it easier to do that.

yea, take your car only if you plan on using it often. parking spaces are difficult to find and it’s not worth paying the garage fee if you’re just going to have your car sit there. you can always catch a ride with friends if you need to and there might be a bus from UT back home.

I agree with the others. A car on campus is a hassle. If you don’t absolutely have to have it, go without.

No. Besides depending where you live there is a shuttle to bus you to and from your city.

sounds like cars at ut are a PITA.

thy even charge parking space rent at apartments??? ***???

I took my car freshman year when I lived at Jester. The only time I used it was when I went home. It was a hassle to have on campus too… my parking pass only allowed my to park out in bfe, so if I wanted to get to my car it was a 15 minute walk. Everything you need is pretty much on campus, and if you need to get to the store, you can take the bus up red river to heb. If you want to get down town, you just take the e bus. So, yeah, no car.

MWM, I live in Dallas, so a commute to Austin every weekend is not happening.

My only reason for wanting a car was to have the freedom to do what I wanted. If I wanted to go visit my family I wouldn’t have to be at the mercy of someone else, or for example if I wanted to go visit friends of mine at Texas Tech, I could take the car to Lubbock for the weekend. It’s really about having the freedom to have choices, and the car would help.

Talk about a looooooooong road trip!! UT to Texas Tech?? Tell them to come visit you - Austin is more fun anyway ;)!

hahaha, well that’s certainly an idea!

taking your car to UT freshman yr is def a bad idea. Im guessing that you are living on campus, my brother is at UT and from all of the kids i know that go there no one had their car as a freshman and those who do have a car are usually from austin. So dont take your car, walking/buses/bike are all great ways of transport.

I wouldn’t if you live on campus because you’ll never use it and just waste money on the permit.

If you’re in an off-campus dorm it’s not as bad of a deal, but you still won’t use it very often. Plus people will bum rides off of you all the time.

And, if you are a pledge, you may have to do “pledge taxi” - so, next son I send will not be taking his car the fall of his freshman year.

I’m glad that having a car is not needed if living on campus.

But how are the buses from Austin to Houston? Are there a lot of them?

Here is the Texas Express one on the UT web site:
[PTS: Texas Express](http://www.utexas.edu/parking/transportation/texasexpress/)

If I want to get a part-time job during the school year, would it be better for me to bring a car?

I think so. I mean your work might call you at the last minute to come in and do some hours, and you can’t really rely on the bus schedule sometimes in situations like that.
