bringing skis to college

Do people do it, assuming there's a hill somewhere nearby? I'm thinking Vassar, Amherst, Hamilton, Wesleyan, etc. I have my own skis but I wouldn't want to drag them all the way out there for nothing, especially if they might get stolen.

Depending on where the school is located, the school may sponsor ski trips throughout the year. Even then, you may be able to rent skis at whatever resort you go to. I probably wouldn't bring the skis with me for that reason, plus they'd take up room in an already-crowded dorm room.

I figured I'd probably want to rent, but I'm definitely not going to have a lot of cash. I guess I'll see where I end up going. Maybe my aunt in MA can store them for me...

I think that the chance of your skis being stolen is rather low...can you imagine someone nonchalantly walking around with skis they'd grabbed from your room? It's somewhat common for people to bring their skis/boards to campus, and just store them under the bed or something. I know on a recent ski club trip at my school, most of the people (45 or so out of 60) had their own.

FYI, ski club makes trips up ever other weekend or so during the winter, so you'd probably want your own. If you live real close, you may be able to head up on light days (I know some mountains have VERY cheap student rates for season tickets).

I guess I'll wait and see, but it sounds like bringing skis wouldn't be too impractical. I may never need them, but if I did join a ski club, I definitely wouldn't want to be paying rental fees every other weekend or however often it would be. Thanks for the tips.

i know a lot of people who brough their ski's to college. most people just kept them under their bed or leaned them up against a corner somewhere. a couple people kept them in their closets.

A guy downstairs kept his in the storage room and went out to the closest ski area (about an hour away) several times last term.

Jackson - take the skiis - you just may get the chance to enjoy them - stick them under your bed - seeing as you are coming cross country - a ski bag - put all your winter/ski stuff in it - and then just stash it. Won't get much use 1st semester - but Thanksgiving or winter/spring semester - good chance.

Sounds good to me. I'd much rather have them if I want them than not have them when there's a chance to go skiing.

There are a few hills within driving distance from Amherst. Mt Snow, Wachusett, Berkshire East. If you plan on going once or twice I'd say bring them, especially if you have a car.

I brought my skis up to school for one semester. I knew I was going to be taking a ski trip and I wanted my own equipment with me. It depends on where you are, how often you think you'd use it and if it's worth it.

In my experience if space gets tight the best thing to do is take your boots and rent your skis. That way what matters most is still yours, and ski rental for a day isn't that much in comparison to, say, the lift ticket.

I took my skis with my senior year; stuck them behind a chair in the corner. I also bought a student ski pass and went up every week or two.

talk to people at your school, how close is it to a resort, how good is it, how often do people go, make your decision from there
