I've just applied to be an international exchange student to IU from my Australian university. When I was filling out my housing application I applied for the Briscoe and I think it was Foster Co-op housing (it was almost 2000 cheaper) I read that it just means that you have to clean up your own room and take out the garbage etc. I was wondering if anyone knows anything else about it, is it in a seperate part of the residence hall? Is it an ordinary room on the same floor as others? Any extra info would be much appreciated!

hmm yeah, I kinda know what the dorm will look like, but on the RPS wewbsite it says that its a small community where everyone pitches in and cleans bathrooms and stuff. I’m just concerned that it’s not on the same floor as others and i’m going to have to clean everyone elses bathrooms! aha

My son is in the same type of community in another dorm. You won’t be cleaning every bathroom in the the big highrise pictured on the website. At least I hope not. You will just have “chores” like cleaning the community bathroom on your floor, emptying trash cans on your floor, vacumning the hall way on your floor. Probably fifteen to thirty minutes worth of chores every two weeks or so. It works out for my son to something like $75 an hour for the little work he does, given that he has his own room and pays only $1,500 per semester. Way cheaper than the rest of the singles, which are probably around $5,000 per school year and up.

oh woah, that sounds great. I was hoping I was going to be on a floor with other normal rooms. Because I’ve asked a few people who go to IU that are on exchange at my university and they seemed to think that it was a seperate house. But this sounds like I’m doing chores on my floor, which is great because I want to meet as many people as possible.

My son is considering one of these types of residential programs at IU. Has your son had a good experience? How much type is he spending on the cleaning aspect and how often?

It’s a great program with absolutely no difference in room style or floor layout than any other floor no matter which residence center it is located in. As bthomp said the commitment is very little for the return 30 minutes every two weeks or so. If you can, have your student apply for it right away, it is well worth it.
