<p>I’m from Canada, too, and I’m pretty sure they won’t penalize you for Canadian/British spelling of words like “neighbourhood” and “theatre”. They have your whole application, so they’ll know you’re Canadian and that the spelling system is somewhat different for a lot of words. It’s more likely to look weird if you say you’re from, I don’t know, Newfoundland or something, and then all your spelling is clearly NOT what you learned in Newfoundland. If you’re really that worried about it, click “Tools” in Word and scroll down to “Language”… depending on the version you have, it either has “English(UK)” or “English(Canada)” set as the default. Click “English(U.S.)” and set it as the default language.
It shouldn’t be a major obstacle to admission if you don’t do this, however. No one’s asking the BBC to change THEIR spelling…:)</p>
