I'm a Canadian applying to numerous universities through the Common App, and I'm curious as to whether I should Americanize my spelling in my application essays. That is, colour becomes color, honour becomes honor, favourite becomes favorite, etc. Opinions? I doubt the admissions committees would grind down to such a niggling little detail, but nevertheless I feel like it's worth asking.

Hopefully adcoms in the US aren’t so ignorant and jingoistic that they would penalize you for spelling words the way they are spelled in the country that you’re from. They know you’re from Canada. Personally, I wouldn’t change my spelling, although that may be more of making a small statement on my part.

Well, as an American, I would say don’t change your spelling. It might cause more problems in the long run. It might make you seem more diverse… you never know :)

I would make sure that my spelling is proper. that is, your current favourite means of doing so :).

the queen’s english is the best english :)

Wouldn’t they want you to use proper American English? When you attend that school, write essays, anything formal they’d want you to be able to spell correctly, right? Those who speak other languages conform and use proper American English, why not you?

They also want diversity, and using non-American spelling exemplifies diversity to some small extent.

nah, it looks cool like that.
