British Student looking to go to school in the US!

Hello! I am currently in school in England and want to go to school in the US. I just finished my GCSEs and am going to take my AS levels this coming year. I am looking into schools that have good psychology programs because that is what I am really interested in. I will take the SATs in October and November, and will like to apply to schools this coming fall/winter. Any suggestions for good school with strong psychology programs? I would like to preferably go to the west coast, but please help me find a comprehensive list including schools from the east coast. Thanks!

Stanford, UCLA, and Berkeley. The last two have painful out of state tuition (out of country for you). The third is very challenging to get into. All three are excellent locations within the United States. If you have impressive stats, these colleges will likely try to grab you. International students are almost like bragging rights.

Thanks for the suggestion. How about other schools in the West or East coast? Does Pomona have a good psych program?

If you're interested in liberal arts schools, check out Wesleyan U. in CT. Very reputable Psych program.

I don't know, I would rather give you suggestions after we see your SAT score, or atleast grades.

do you care about size of school? urban vs rural vs suburban?

I haven't taken the SATs yet, but am planning to in October and November. I will get my GCSE marks back at the end of this month, but am expecting at least 5A* 5A.

Huskem- I don't really care about the size of the school that much, but would like more of an urban setting.

Also, I am interested in Business in addition to Psychology. I really love Psychology but my parents want me to do business too since they are both in banking and business.

Thanks alot for the input!

It is hard to recommend any schools without knowing what sort of student you are, but for now, I will recommend you check out the following schools, assuming you want the option of double majoring in Psychology and Business:

Carnegie Mellon University
Cornell University
Indiana University-Bloomington
Massaschusetts Institute of Technology
University of California-Berkeley
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
University of Pennsylvania
University of Texas-Austin
University of Virginia
University of Wisconsin-Madison

If you don't have to major in Business...if Economics would do, then this opens things up considerably. Practically every good university has respected Econ and Psych departments. Here are some I can think of:

Amherst College
Brown University
Carleton College
Claremont McKenna College
Columbia University
Dartmouth College
Duke University
Harvard University
Haverford College
Middlebury College
Pomona College
Princeton University
Stanford University
Swarthmore College
University of California-Los Angeles
University of California-San Diego
University of Chicago
Wesleyan University
Williams College
Yale University

Thanks so much for the good list Alexandre! I will look into a lot of them and try to narrow it down!

i hope you have very good scores b/c the list of schools alexandre gave you are all pretty hard to get into ^_^ but then i'm not sure what "5A* 5A" means, maybe he does!

An A* is like an A+ and an A is...well, an A. So basically, he is a straight A student. The list I provide above is definitely made up of selective schools. However, if he can pull off 10 As on the O Level exams, I'd say he has a decent chance at most of the schools.

I looked at most of these schools and see that they are indeed quite selective. What are some good match and safety schools for me? I took a practice SAT from a book and only got a 1940. I will work on them some more though. My ECs are also not so strong, so I would like to find a good list of middle-tiered schools strong in Psychology and Business. Thanks again!

Indiana would be a safety and Wisconsin a match for you. I'd say most of the schools are reasonable reaches, especially if you can improve your SAT to say 2100, which isn't a stretch since you are almost at the 2000 range never having taken an SAT-type exam before.

An A* is like having an A out of the A's...errr...like a 95+ percentage...and an A is a normal A...so he is a smart guy hehe
