Broadway Theatre Project

Anyone familiar with this summer program in Tampa. Florida? My daughter loves Stagedoor Manor, but I was wondering how BTP might compare. It looks like BTP has an emphasis on dance, which is my daughter's weakest area.

Thanks!

Hi, dramama,

BTP has definitely been discussed on this forum several times. I must go to bed now rather than searching, but you could try a search. I'll try to find more for you this weekend.

BTP was one of the three programs we evaluated for this summer. Their info. can be found on their web site (I think broadwaytp.org), and they mailed me a nice brochure. I do believe they have much dance in the program. I think some parent who post have kids who go to this, so hopefully they will reply.

We chose OCU for summer program and are heading there later this weekend! We have no regrets about choosing this one over BTP.

My D was going to go to BTP this summer, but then got into UMichigan off the waitlist so she is going there instead. The people I talked to at BTP were very nice and it sounded like a terrific program, especially since my D is a dancer (a rising junior in high school). I had emails from two moms of kids who had gone there and loved it and felt they really had good experiences and learned a lot,I think I remember one was going back again this year actually. It didn't really sound like the same type of program that a college program like UM, CMU, OCU, SU, etc. have, not as focused on audition prep, and actual college type classes, etc. although they said there certainly was some of that too. My D was quite sad to have to turn it down, but since she would have been one of the youngest there, she feels it would be a great program to do maybe after her freshman year of college, but REALLY wanted to go to UM this summer and that seemed like the best program for her right now.
From the sounds of it, it wouldn't be anything like SDM which is more focused on putting on a show-either MT or non-musical, with classes also offered, where BTP sounds more like putting on a Broadway review type of show at the end, and the vast majority of participants are already out of high school.
I think if you look back on the Summer Programs thread, there is at least some discussion about BTP, because I had asked about it at one point earlier this year. Maybe you can find those posts too. Not all of them were positive, but the people I spoke to personally had nothing but great things to say about it! And auditions are required for BTP, which you can find on their website, or I also saw an ad in the December or January issue of Dance Magazine. Good luck with your decision-making!

My D, who just finished her freshman year at UMich, was accepted to BTP for this summer but had to turn it down when she was offered a great contract to do summerstock. She was really looking forward to BTP and 4 of her freshman MT classmates at UM will be going this summer, 2 repeaters, two for the first time.

Several posters have raised the issue about what is the best time to go to BTP and my own opinion is that although this program really does take lots of kids from 15-16 years old and up, there is a very wide age range and experience range represented there which makes it a program better suited to college kids and beyond. My D went to CMU as a rising high school senior and that program offers both great all around training AND fabulous audition prep. All work, however and NO real performance other than scene work in class and occasional EC offereings. I think that other programs also discussed in these threads, e.g., the Northwestern Cherubs program (NHSI?), the programs at UM, OCU and Steinhardt, are all better choices for high school students.

Another reason to go to BTP is for the great professional contacts you can make; but if you go there later in your training, you are probably more likely to get "noticed" and/or be in a postion to exploit those contatcts.

Just one person's opinion.....

I know a girl in my city (currently a rising senior in high school) who went to BTP last year and is going again this year. She is a great dancer, and apparently loved it there last year... So much so, that she turned down two other college camp/intensive acceptances to go again!
I guess it's all on what strikes your fancy when it comes to college and pre-college type camps and intensives. All you can do is know what you want and research, research, research!

For original discussion on BTP, go to page 13 on MT forum, then to Part 31, then to Page 3. Start with scogor's post on 10/22 and go from there.

I think this was also discussed on the summer program thread, but that one will be easier for you to look through to find it.
