I just heard that I got into the Brooklyn BA/MD program and I feel lucky. I would like some feedback on what people think about the program...

Suny downstate really isn’t the best medical school–in fact not even close to top tier
unlike undergraduate studies, going where you go for graduate studiese (ex. downstate) is important especially for residency
if you really want to be a doctor you would be willing to go the normal route and getting into a better med school
since you got into the ba md program, i am sure you are more than able to do well in undergrad somewhere else and beast the mcat
i know someone who was in that program but transferred out bc they realized how sub satisfactory down state is
good medical school is sooooo important for a good residency match

As someone on the verge of graduating from Downstate, I have to disagree with the above poster. You should be excited to be in the BA/MD program. Congratulations!

Downstate gives you unparalleled clinical exposure in an underserved urban community. You will be very well prepared for residency compared to some of your more pampered graduates of private schools (and at roughly half the tuition). Downstate produces a huge amount of physicians who practice in New York, so if you plan to stay in NY, downstate is a good place to start off.

You should ask others, particularly those who actually attend school here. You’ll be able to tell by talking to them if it is right for you. I personally would not have traded it. Sure there’s room for improvement, but that’s always true.

Congrats again, just be sure you really want to be a doctor. I don’t quite know how you can know that so young, but to each his own. Don’t be afraid to take time off to round out your experience and your knowledge before you commit to a life of medicine. Remember it’s not a race… After all, think about what the finish line is… Don’t be in a hurry to get there.

Enjoy the journey.

Hey, I also got in and I am really excited. check out the facebook group i made for it
