Brother's Chances

My brother will just be ending his junior year, and here's his stats.

3.3 GPA (UW)
18 ACT (Yikes!)
Won some academic awards.
Community service at local food pantry.
2 teacher recommendations

Started out with a GPA in the 2.8-3.0 range, but all of a sudden his junior year he's made a 4.0 both semesters.

Wants to major in Biology and go to either a Big12 or Big 10 school.

Where should he apply, and what would be his reaches, safeties, and matches?

Thanks

A shot a Texas Tech and Kansas. Essentially every other 12 or 10 school is a pretty big reach with his stats. He needs to up his ACTs another 5+ points.

I know he's already in at: Nebraska, Iowa, and Mizzou(in-state). But what about the other schools such as Indiana and Michigan State?

Missouri is a Big 12 school. My biology teacher went there, and she is so smart!

I had very similar stats and got into Indiana coming out of high school. Not sure how you should account for that it was 7+ years ago though (plus 1k scholarship...quad legacy):p

I think they really liked my increase in grades from freshman to junior years!

I had much better stats and got WL @ IU for biz.
No way @ IU, MSU, Iowa.

I don't understand how you say he can't get into Iowa. Iowa uses a 100 point system of rank+(actx2), and if that score is greater than 100 you're in.

I'll throw in that he's almost the top 25%, didn't realize I forgot to include that.

27% rank, 18 ACT. 73 points(Rank)+18x2= 109

Nebraska just requires that he ranks in the top half of his class.
Mizzou, I'm not sure, I do know theres a chart but I forgot the chart. However I managed to get in with a lower GPA (higher ACT) so that shouldn't be a problem getting into either.

Indiana's website says for Indiana residents to be in the top 40% and non-residents to be in top 1/3. And if I remember from the time that I visited Indiana some time ago, it was that ACT doesn't really matter, but rather that you've done your core classes and have a decent rank.

Iowa State I'm pretty sure he's in but I forgot how their admissions works.

Anyone know about MSU or Purdue?
Which would mean he's accepted.

Kinglin, your brother will have a tough time getting in MSU where the averages for the most recent class are 3.6 gpa and 25 ACT. He could swing the GPA if he matched the avg ACT, but an 18 reeeaallly hurts him. His top 25% ranking won't help him as I think around 70% of MSU's class ranks that -- it's not really considered important at MSU like grades (especially) and test scores. He should stick with Nebraska and Mizzou where you say he's all but in... Those are very good flagship schools; Nebraska, being from such a small, isolated (from big cities) state is particularly underrated. It's got a lot of endowment money and a rich history in the sciences and literature/English (home of the famed Prairie Schooner lit mag).

He'll get into MSU and IU. He may want to try the SAT, re-take the ACT to be sure. Still, these colleges care more about GPA than test scores. And if you get into MSU and IU, you'll get into Purdue.
