Brown 2015 Hopefuls

Med schools won’t know if you’ve failed it or dropped it before the end of a term. Though it may be implied by the number of courses you have in a term.

I think most people use the S/NC option for classes outside of their concentration.

Brown 2015 applicant here! I’m hoping to study theatre, english, languages, philosophy, anthropology, history…The list goes on! Haha that’s why I like the idea of the open curriculum!

Does anyone know if there’s a better chance in applying ED? I’m seriously considering it, but see little reason if I have the same chance. When I went to visit, the admissions officer said this year had an acceptance rate of about a 9% RD and 19% ED, which is obviously huge, but about half of those accepted regular were sports recruits and I think some others were something else that I’m not. And I’m guessing that RD applicants are better qualified at any rate.

Of course, admission rate is not the only thing driving my interest in ED, but it is a factor. Anyone have more info on this?

When this discussion came up last year, the general consensus we reached was that, taking recruited athletes (and legacy) into account, we couldn’t see any real difference. Obviously, applying ED shows more demonstrated interest, but all other ED candidates will be showing that, so there’d be no benefit there.

Hmm starting early is definitely not a bad idea, considering that I started late and was under immense stress on chrismas day, writing essays  but in hindsight i liked my brown sup essay more than my common app essay, even though I spent a month on the latter and only three days on the former… U never know…

I am attending Brown next year as a theater major, and I will not tell a lie. I began my application December 29. Having said that, I already had many essays that would work, and my essays were rather good. Moral of the story: It is not how early you start, it is how hard you work.

I am SO excited and super nervous! Brown is probably my top choice, but I am intimidated by the low international students admissions rates for Ivy League shcools. I live in Canada. Anyways, I registered for the June 5th SAT and am probably trying the ACT in september. I’ll probably take my SAT IIs (thinking about biology, math I and math II) in the fall.

I’m just hoping that this time, next year, a big fat envelope will have arrived in the mail, with a letter beginning with “We are excited to inform you…” or “Congratulations!” or “It is our honour to welcome you…”

:) GOOD LUCK, EVERYBODY. I mean it. You know we all need it, haha.

Gotta hope for the best, but know the worst!
Even if we don’t make it into Brown, it’s not the end of the world and it’s not as if we are failures. Even though I know my chances aren’t the greatest, I’m still going to try.

You just never know ;)

All I can say is that I’m SUPER nervous about applying everywhere and anywhere… being rejected from something this big will definitely take a toll on me

Anyhow, I love Brown! and there PLME program!!! <333333333

You actually can check your decision online. I still can remember how I saw the word “congratulations” and began screaming like crazy. So, good luck!

FINISH YOUR ESSAY BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS!!!

I didn’t finish my essay in the summer and when school started, I had way too much schoolwork to do than to focus on my essays. As a result I submitted my app on Dec 31 (that was the epitome of stress) but I still got in! (It’s also just a personal quirk on mine that I write the best essays under extreme duress). However, even if you finish your essays in the summer, I would wait to send in the entire app because you might win some awards. In my case, I got an internship in December and I really think that added to my extracurriculars.

I second fortuna16’s suggestion. While I never used the essay I wrote during the summer for Brown, it gave me several ideas which I turned some into essays (on December 31st no less! Winter break after Christmas was brutaalll). I spent five weeks of my summer at a summer program in which I had an opportunity to develop several essays. To be honest however, I basically rehashed my essays from previously written ones for other colleges, which I can happily say paid off ;).

I plan on having a few rough drafts to work with throughout summer but I’ll probably end up finishing during winter break.

I’m applying!!!

Question: when you apply to Brown, do you also apply for a major? And do they actually take your intended major into account when making decisions?

You select an area of interest/potential major that’s for all intents and purposes not used; don’t choose an obscure one that you think they want to see; choose what you’re truly interested in, especially if your activities can confirm your interest in the field. You’ll get Brown, and although it’ll be listed on Banner for the first 3 terms, it won’t be your major, and you’ll just declare in your 4th semester.

Thanks, Uroogla!

I know that Rice evaluates the applicant in the context of his/her intended major; I’m assuming that Brown does too (which is why I asked–I wasn’t sure).

Coming from a conservative family, I was very surprised that I liked Brown as much as I did, but I will [probably] be applying next year too  Depending on finances, I suppose I’m a potential Early Decision candidate, as well.

Good luck to everyone!

^ There are quite a few aspects of Brown that would sound appealing to any HS student lol.

^ Including [The Brown Daily Herald - More than half of grades are now A’s, data show](http://www.browndailyherald.com/campus-news/more-than-half-of-grades-are-now-a-s-data-show-1.1668702).

I’m not sure if I’m going to apply to PLME or not, but I’m definitely applying to Brown either way :)
