Brown Class of 2017 RD!

had my interview today! the interviewer said she would write a great recommendation for me, she definitely talked about herself a lot though… kind of gave me her whole life story… goes to show that all interviewers approach the process very differently

My interviewer did the same thing… we definitely had a lot in common though. she’s in her last year at oxford law, and I’m considering a couple of uk schools too so we talked about that (among other things)

I had my interview today! It was amazing! The lady was so sweet and kind. :3

Hi… Any international students here that got an interview? My son hasn’t heard yet.

I already had my interview last Wednesday. I’m Korean applicant living in Thailand right now. I got contacted the first week of January. I think my interviewer was very on-schedule. Don’t worry if your son doesn’t get an offer of interview until mid-February or never. Interviews aren’t that all important.

Best of luck!

Did anyone have an interview experience that made them feel differently about Brown? It seems like everyone loved their interviews. I can’t help but think mine was a bit off-putting. I went to one of the interview events, and the alumni seemed very confident, almost to the point of arrogance. I just didn’t get the feel from the school that everything else has lead me to expect. I understand pride for one’s school, but they seemed to fit the snobbish stereotype that hovers around the ivies. Did anyone else have a bad taste in their mouth after an interview?

i get what you mean… a lot of the other interviewers there were really outgoing and excited, but then again i only saw them for the few seconds that they were grabbing interviewees from my room. my opinion didnt really change… but i also certainly expected that air of confidence you are referring to.

All those who had a interview already can you tell me something I should avoid saying or anything you learned from your experience?

@alisiddiqui94
You can PM me if you want, but I’ll share some of the things I learned from the interview.
I didn’t have any regrets or “oh I wish I would’ve said that” thoughts after the interview though :)

1) Know Brown. Obviously. But dig a little deeper. What makes Brown so different? Why is Brown a fit for you?

2) I recommend you brushing up on the Open Curriculum. High chance of this topic being discussed during the interview.

3) Know your dreams and ambitions. Don’t laugh, I mean it! Why are you trying to achieve what you want to achieve? How is Brown going to help you with achieving it?

4) Ask questions. Ask what the interviewer’s experience was like at Brown. Or ask him something totally random haha. You can catch the interviewer off-guard too you know!

5) Be sincere. I can’t stress this enough. Interviewers are people and they can tell if you’re sincere or not. Being sincere will help you speak easier to, because you’re not making the stuff you’re saying up. Talk from your heart.

I know that my tips are pretty corny and probably the same things what all the other people say, but these are what I learned from the interview. Best of luck!

@alisiddiqui94: I practically wore a suit to my brown interview, got there, and my interviewer was in a blue down coat and jeans. Pretty weird at first, but it helped me to loosen up a bit. My point? It’s Brown. The alumni are former Brown students - now, this might not apply to every interviewer, of course, but choosing what to wear can be hard if you’re trying to make a good first impression. At least that was my experience:)

Thank you guys those are some great tips. :)

Hello Applicants!

My name is Mark Valdez, and I’m a Senior Staff Writer at the Brown Daily Herald! I wish you all success as admission decisions roll out in a couple of months.

I am currently writing an article about the use of the SAT in admission decisions. I was wondering if any current applicants would be willing to speak with me about this. Please e-mail me at mark_valdez@brown.edu if you’d like! I would really appreciate it! Best of luck!

I just got contacted for an interview…cue the suspenseful music and the close up of my face…“Let’s do this!”

Hahaha jk I’m nervous as nervous can be, I hope it goes well.

Just had my Brown interview. It was terrible. In response to some of my questions such as: ‘What did you get from a Brown education that you couldn’t get elsewhere?’ and ‘Brown was recently rated as the college with the happiest students nationwide - were you happy at Brown?’, the interviewer questioned their relevance and importance. He then said he thought Brown would ‘scare me *less’ (???). DEAR SWEET TUPAC COULD IT HAVE GONE ANY WORSE?

@POmani
I’m SO sorry that you weren’t able to enjoy your interview (to say the least).
Seeing that the interviewer swore (-____-), I don’t think he/she was very professional.
I’m cheering for you! Don’t feel too bad :)

Yo thanks man :)

He swore, that’s peculiar! I’m sure you did fine… as long as you sustained a conversation and didn’t sprout a second head. It sounds as if you executed your interview with grace. I’ll have my fingers crossed for you!

Cheers mate, I handled being challenged quite well. He thought it would be such a shock to me given I’d lived in the Middle East, a sheltered Islamic society (i’m guessing). I knew I couldn’t respond with: ‘well, sir, I think you’ll find that you are 110% wrong.’ so I responded calmly and tried to suggest that he was only half-wrong, in that I had lived in three countries and had been exposed to various cultures and interacted with peoples of all nations, which had in fact enriched me as a person, and that I hadn’t been cooped up in a compound all my life.

Yeah I wouldn’t worry… I’m sure they won’t penalise you. I got told that they’ve already made a decision by the time they reach the interview report, so it doesn’t make MASSES of difference… he sounds a bit harsh though, aren’t they meant to make you feel comfortable??

@POmani… I’m sorry, I had to laugh a bit. What a weird interviewer! See, this is why the interview doesn’t really count for much in the application process - there’s no way to weed out people like that.
