Brown Class of 2020 Early Decision Discussion

Its so intimidating how its finally our time to fill out these threads… @-)
But yeah, its that time, and its never too early to start one of these threads given that common app comes out in 30 days

The common app questions are already live

^^

I figured it wouldn’t be too long until you guys would point that out, oh well. I don’t get why they release the questions and not the application itself >:)

Is any of you guys doing ED for PLME? Cuz this year the policy changed :frowning:

has anyone finished their supplements yet?

Eh kind of, I wrote down my thoughts in the form of a rough draft but now i have to edit it and make it sound more official and less casual. What about anyone else?

I have slowly been coming up with ideas for all of the different essays, but I just haven’t been able to put my thoughts into words! I have made the deadline of September 1st to have my drafts done!

SOO who here has submitted their application? Better question, who here is freaking out about the whole process?

My essays are almost done. It’s been a whirlwind

In terms of admissions? No. There’s athletes, legacies, and a bunch of high achieving people in that pile. But they defer so many ED applicants that I don’t think it’ll hurt your chances either, and if you happen to get in it makes the rest of senior year much easier

So I haven’t completed any essays and I’m kind of feeling the rush now haha. Trying to get everything submitted by the 25th so wish me luck! And good luck to everyone applying ED! I’m sure y’all are wonderful candidates!

@sayfullahstah heres an interesting demographic of admission rate ed vs rd for the class of 2019
http://■■■■■■■■■■■■/2019-ivy-league-admissions-statistics/

@Homsar that data doesn’t take into account all of the legacies and athletes in ED, as well as the fact that it’s a stronger pool overall

@sayfullahstah that’s a good point, but in RD there’s a portion of people who are unqualified and apply just because they can. That exists in ED as well, but to a lesser extent, and the people who are applying early typically see themselves as competitive and have a really strong interest in the school. This basically means you’re in a pool of legacies, recruited athletes, and mostly strong applicants who probably have really passionate essays. It’s not necessarily worse than RD, but also not better. As a side note, anyone who considers Brown a safety is a fool (I don’t think that’s what you meant though)

@collegebobollege While you are correct in saying both of those points, (maybe not the latter) I would say that it would help you out regardless of the pool. It shows that you have a clear path and that you know that the college is “the one”. Preparation and dedication towards one career path makes your character look a bit better, thus increasing acceptance rate. That’s what I was told by someone in admissions. Its a reach for all of us no matter what though

@Homsar you make a good point, and I agree that ED could help slightly, especially since schools like to protect their yield. I just don’t want anyone to think the raise in chances is nearly as big as that data suggests, because there are a lot of factors that go into the higher admission rate for ED.

Yes, ED is a stronger pool. It has students who are aware of and ready to apply early – affluent students, private school students, students who don’t need to retake the SAT in the fall, students who don’t need another semester of grades to boost their GPA.

The number of students who would consider Brown a “safety” school could be counted on one hand (Malia Obama would be one, I guess). I’m not sure what universe you exist in where students view Brown as easy to get into.

“Brown: Open Curriculum, how I can stay concentrated in my major and how it can let my mind soar”

I sure hope you meant soar into other academic explorations outside the major.

Hi guys! Very excited to join the thread. Just submitted my ED application, so I figured I’d join the conversation. Yeah, either way the pool is competitive and the odds aren’t great, but if you love a school you just have to go for it and keep your fingers crossed. Good luck to everyone!
