Hello ! Thank you for your post. I am an international undergraduate student who just got deferred from Brown ED. Do you have any advice on what I should do next ? I really want to get in but I am not sure if I should send an email and if so, what I should say… Could you please give me some guidance. Thank you so much !

I’d recommend looking online for what a LOCI/Letter of Continued Interest is. Mine had a brief reiteration of interest in attending Brown and any updates with ECs.

rejected. my stats: white woman from central coast CA, interest in biochemistry and women’s studies, intending to be a surgeon, good community service, well-rounded extracurriculars, good GPA and class ranking, excellent essays, FANTASTIC video portfolio. not really sure what went wrong,

Since I can’t find an RD thread for Brown '25, if there is anyone planning to apply to Brown RD, please reach out! I will be more than happy to send my accepted personal statement and writing supplement as well as look over your writing and offer suggestions

Thank you !

Hi All! DS was deferred from ED. Can someone help explain the logic that those who were deferred from ED in the past had RD admit rates that are “similar” to the regular RD pool as Brown states? On the one hand this implies that the ED applicant passed some hurdle and was not of the 50% rejected, but yet this also implies that there is zero benefit from being deferred vs a RD applicant. No doubt, deferred applicants get in but if we’re running the numbers we’re saying that 1662 were deferred and using last years numbers 7.66% (123) of them will be accepted in the RD round. So what about those other 1539? For applicants, it would seem to be nicer if the deferred pool was smaller and actual admits higher. I’m wondering if that is actually the case and Brown just doesn’t want to muck up its ED app pool by giving people the impression that they have 2 shots at higher admit rates. TY!

Brown doesn’t release actual numbers, as far as I know, but here’s what my deferral letter said last year: “During the past few years, the admission rate for students deferred Early Decision has been consistent with that for Regular Decision applicants.”

ED deferral RD admit rates were probably skewed last year b/c of COVID (since schools were worried about not having enough students accept their offer), but there’s definitely still a chance to be admitted. With deferrals, the logic IMO is that Brown’s (or any other school) unsure whether or not they’ll find someone better in the RD pool, and if they don’t, they’ll accept you instead.

My daughter was accepted ED class of 25. Stats Sat 1540. GPA 98/100 scale. 5s on all of her AP Exams. She has a strong commitment to service. pretty decent coding skills for her age and is passionate about social justice issues. Was a competitive jump roper in high school and found out brown has a tiny team! Has an interest in applied math.

Hi all,

I’m new to college confidential and just came on here to ask for suggestions. I was deferred from Brown a few days ago, and it’s been the school I’ve set my eye on for the past few months. I know it’s unlikely that I will be accepted in the regular decision pool, so I’m wondering if there’s anything I can do to help my case. I’m hoping to be accepted into a selective program in my state related to my areas of interest (social justice and Judaism) in the next week or so, and I recently recieved an award in a MUN conference. Should I email my AO with the update? In addition, would you suggest asking my AO about what I can do to make my application better? I have had no prior correspondence with her and I’m thinking maybe building a relationship could help. Thoughts? I’m grateful for any feedback!

Include the information about the program, the award, and any other updates in your LOCI (Letter of Continued Interest). Don’t contact your AO and ask what you can do better, since they won’t (and probably can’t, for fairness sake) provide feedback on individual applications. You can upload your LOCI to your Brown applicant portal.

Hi Hayden! I’m applying RD to Brown and was wondering if you have any advice or extra ideas for the video portfolio. I can’t figure out how to frame it. Would it be too boring if I did something like “5 interesting facts about me” and explain each fact in depth? Any tips you have would be greatly appreciated!

i hear you! my daughter too

I really don’t think there are any right or wrong ways to go about it. For example, my VP was just me sitting down and speaking directly to the camera about what it would mean for me and my community to attend Brown as a first-gen student from a rural, low-income area. On the other side of that, I know a girl who did hers giving a tour of the plants in her room!

Really I think they just care to see that you’re a real human being with a personality who is also able to communicate with others, not just a robot who sits in its room all day preparing for AP exams or self-studying ancient languages. For more ideas about the VP, if you just search “Brown video portfolio” on YouTube, a ton of results will come up for accepted ones. Hope that helped!

motherpossum: not really sure what went wrong

Nothing, probably. I’ve interviewed hundreds of similar (highly-qualified) Brown applicants. Not many of them get in. 40 RD’s interviewed one year, for example, with only one admitted and one waitlisted. None of the 19 ED’s and RD’s I interviewed for the Class of 2024 cycle were admitted, and that group included some really good ones.
