what's so great about Brown? How do you get chosen to live there? how hard is it to get in? (I am not talking about brown university)

Greatness of brown:
1. Smack in the middle of the campus - where everyone aspires to live (30 seconds away from Comm school and Newcomb; 1 minute from Alderman and Clemons [major libraries]; 2 minutes to the lawn; 4 minutes to Cabell Hall [where you'll take most of your classes]; close to e-school.

Most liberal and creative students around in the campus live here.

A/C rooms and rooms are bigger than in other dorms - especially first-year dorms. You have your own room as well!

A 24 hour computer lab, 2 lounges, 1 kitchen, laundry room.

A tunnel which connects all 13 portals (a portal is just like a "sub" dorm).

It's easiest to get in when you apply as a first-year. So you better apply before the deadline if you're thinking of living here during your first-year. The intake is about 45 first-years.

Brown isn't for everyone so I'd suggest living in first year dorms for your first year and then decide if Brown is somewhere you want to live. Just remember that living at Brown won't get you the full first-year experience like old/new dorms.

You have to apply for Brown and the application is interesting to say the least.

considering half of the active uva students on cc live in brown i think it says something about how cc students get along with brownies haha.

there are ppl who were glad to live here their first year and there are ppl who regretted not living in 1st yr dorms. i guess theres no way to know beforehand?? i am glad i am living here my first year. and YES it is SO much easier to get in as a first year.

as a first year, the best things have been having upperclassmen available to help you transition as well as a core group of 1st years ready to hang out with you as well; the location obviously; the amount of activities we can do compared to other 1st yr dorms bc our endowment is HUGE, etc etc. best decision i ever made, applying to live here my first year. i can't even associate uva without brown in my mind.

the only thing some of us regret a little is that we feel SO segregated from the rest of the 1st yr class - its like we dont even identify with them a lot of the time, or at least me and ppl who i have talked to about this that also live in brown as a 1st yr.

we also have a website http://www.brown-college.org this has the application (our new one will be up soon and it is pretty funny if i do say so myself) and instructions on submitting it and all as well as pictures, wiki, etc (though the wiki is out of date) so you can see what we are all about. :)

Then again, old/new dorms aren't for everyone because you'll be surrounded with first-year students. I think Brown gives you the more 'whole' experience since you have an opportunity to interact with students of all years. It's harder to get into Brown as an upperclassmen (chances are 50-50) than as a first-year. Not many first-years know you can live in Brown; here's a chance for you to live at a residential college located in the middle of the campus. We have so many social events, from banquets to carnivals. It's amazing. And have fun doing our application :) We, as the current residents, get to read your applications!

Can you still apply to live in Brown if you're an Echols?

Last year a girl who was Echols applied and got in but because she hadn't put it as her #1 choice on the housing form she was assigned to Echols housing.

Is there any correlation between the time you submit your application and the probability of entry? I heard about brown a while ago, and having completed the application, I can safely say that those questions were the only ones I enjoyed answering throughout the college process.

In short, should I submit my answers soon (I may edit them a bit more) or wait? I don't want to get anything mixed up by sending in materials too far in advance. Also, I assume a word document attachment - by email - is fine?

What are the questions like? Couple of examples perhaps.

question 3
a. Illustrate your ultimate personal tomb defense system, so that those pesky archaeologists will
think twice before digging up your remains and untold wealth.
b. Recast “Star Wars” using only dead presidents. Who would Martin van Buren play? Be careful
with TJ; don’t be lame.
c. What’s you favorite communicable disease?

"don't be lame" was originally "don't suck" aka DONT CAST TJ AS FREAKING HANS SOLO OR LUKE OR YOU WONT GET IN. but i guess that was too harsh (though, "yo mamma's a ho you gonna take that" wasn't? - from last year's app).

but seriously don't suck on that one. just avoid that one if it makes you nervous.

time has nothing to do with it, they're all read at once.

if you have fun with it, we will probably have fun reading it. don't make us read an app that sucks, no one wants to hate you but we will. jk.

Entertain us, and take risks! The best applications are ones that are not only well-written, but also structured with creativity and great imagination.

How many first years usually apply? These questions are loltastic but intimidating. I feel like if I answer them in a goofy manner the readers will just be like "...".

That's part of the whole fun of doing this application! Don't predict what we, as readers, would want to read. Rather, portray it in your own voice, put some creativity of your own in it, and try to entertain both yourself and us.

yes, definitely be crazy.

two years ago, there was a question "have you ever been arrested? if no, why not?" the only person who did well on that question's answer went like this:

i live next to a bank. i have (insert tool names here). this is my cellphone number. if my acceptance to brown depends on me getting arrested, please call me immediately.

so please, be creative, and HAVE FUN. that is the most important part of the app imho. if you have fun with it, we will have fun reading it. :) be yourself and you will probably be just fine. GOOD LUCK AND I HOPE YOU ALL GET IN AND JOIN OUR AMAZING CC BROWN COMMUNITY!! :)

What's the acceptance rate? :D

It's probably about 50%, but it varies from year to year. The always good news is that it's easier to get in as a first-year rather than as an upperclassman.

Remember that the deadline is May 31, 2007!

Ok, so I have been thinking about applying to BC for some time now, but with the recent posts and one look at the application and I was hooked even more. But I have my doubts as well. And knowing that I am doubting whether I really want to live there my frist year is making think "Do I really want this? If I did why would I question it?" My main concern is that missing "first year" experience. I am a very social person, I like to listen to House music, trance...I love dancing and I definitely want to explore the social scene. I am just afraid that if I do go to BC, then I won't be able to fully explore that. So, the current first years there...did you have any doubts at first? HOw is your social life...any last words to win me over and make me truly apply :D

I lived there as a first-year and I didn't regret doing so at all. In fact, living there just made realize how unique it is to be able to interact with students of other years. Every "first year" experience is different, and certainly for me, I felt well-equipped as I learned so many things from upperclassmen. Brown people are friendly and sociable; just imagine NYU kids! Many people here go to house parties during weekends, so the social scene is definitely there when you want it.

if anything the social scene in brown is better - 1st yrs dont know all the cool places to go so they just go to frats whatever. with a bunch of upperclassmen you will be invited to all of the awesome parties. not that i go but i know plenty who do. same with drinking (NOT CONDONING UNDERAGE DRINKING - i dont drink) as far as there are plenty legal ppl in brown.

i never doubted wanting to live here... like i have said i feel kind of disconnected from the rest of the 1st yr class... but not in a bad way! i am much more connected to my upperclass friends and cannot imagine uva without them. and i also am more involved with the cville community. i was walking today and some guy came out of his apartment on 14th street. and i realized that he was an upperclassman and i was a "freshman" and that was the first time that had happened all year. it really elmininates the awkwardness of being a first year and assimilates you much better into the university as a whole.

you can do anything and more in brown than you could do in 1st yr dorms. 1 RA for every 2 buildings, think of it that way.

but i know there are ppl who really cherish their 1st yr experience so i mean better to do it than to regret?? i dunno. i love it, but there are plenty of ppl who didn't live here their first yr. it is just a lot easier to get in your 1st yr tho.
