Brown interview FAQ and answers

What are some of the questions to expect at a brown interview? I’m sure all interviewers take a different approach, but are there any general or required questions?

I heard the interview is the funnest part

“funnest”? brush up on grammar before your interview? It is true that the interview is often fun.

Your first step would be to see whether or not your times would be competitive - check the athletics website. Next, you should probably contact the coach. I’m sure your track coach in high school could help you out with this process as well.

What questions to expect? If you read through this thread you should get some answers. I’m sure you’ll be asked “why Brown?” and to discuss your extracurricular activities and intellectual pursuits. Other than that, there are no standard questions and each interviewer has his/her own favorites.

stefanbamloo, there is a forum on College Confidential for recruited athletes. I recommend you find that and read up (in addition to what bruno said).

LOL: stefan has gone from asking how to be noticed by college track coaches (on 10/26) and unable to compare his/her times to current collegians to advising other posters about recruitment.

The most important thing for any interview is to make sure you leave an impression and are genuine.

Interviewers see hundreds of applicants and hear the same rehearsed questions and answers over and over. You must bring something to the table.

What is something about you that will contribute or change Brown and it’s surrounding community in a positive way.

You must also demonstrate that your prior activities and interest coincide with what you are saying about who you are .

I just had my interview yesterday and it lasted 3 hours… We ended up talking about so many different things, mostly not even brown-related. Wish I spoke a bit more though; I forgot about several things that I wanted to talk about.

Most interviews do not last 3 hours. Most are under an hour. Anyone who does not have a. 3 hour interview should not be concerned.

And Brown alums do not interview hundreds of applicants. Maybe 3 a year.

@fireandrain Thank you for starting such an informative post! I have a question regarding receiving an email for an interview. I have not yet been contacted by the university regarding anything related to interviews. I called earlier this week and an admissions representative told me that if I do not hear back from the university by Friday (which for me is Saturday since I live in Korea), I should try emailing them. Should I continue to wait for a reply?

Just had my interview today! It lasted for an hour and a half before I had to leave for an extracurricular activity. I definitely didn’t get to say all that I wanted to say. The interviewer did a lot of talking, and I didn’t want to interrupt him, or he would move on to another subject before I could say something. They did think that I am a good fit for Brown, and they did recommend an acceptance, but I feel like the report they sent in could have been stronger if the interview had been longer and if I had gotten to say everything I wanted to say. I plan to talk to them even after the interview is completed. I was just wondering if it would be possible for them to send Brown an additional report on me? I understand that this is unlikely though.

@xiuhan Exactly how I felt with my interviewer even with the 3 hour that I got… “He did a lot of the talking and I didn’t want to interrupt him, or he would just move on to another subject before I could say something.” I don’t think they’ll let you do another interview report though.

Ahh, I was finally contacted for my interview yesterday! I thought it would never come!
I googled the guy and apparently he’s a doctor of medicine. Should I refer to him as Dr. or Mr. for the interview? He didn’t specify his official title or even his job when he sent me the email about the interview, but I don’t want to be rude! I know some people are really touchy about their titles.

sludge, how did he sign his email? If he wrote “John Smith” or just “John”, then address him that way. If he was the touchy sort, he would have signed his email Dr. Smith. As I said in response to another post, we interviewers do not expect students to Google us or know anything at all about our background.

xihun: No, interviewers can’t send in an additional report. Please remember that in the grand scheme of things, interviews are not that important. No one gets an acceptance based on an interview.

sykim: It’s up to you. Call if you want, don’t call – it won’t make a jot of difference on whether you get accepted. Remember that this week is Thanksgiving in the US, so admissions will definitely be closed on Thursday. Not every international student is going to be interviewed given the logistics. And if you get deferred, you can probably get an interview for the regular decision round.

@fireandrain, Thanks! He signed it with his first and last name, so I guess I’ll just call him Mr.
And the interview is in a few hours and I am SO nervous. Good luck to everyone who has yet to interview!

I just finished my interview! (huffpuffhuff!!) It was a thirty minute phone call and he asked really generic questions and we had issues with a dropped connection, but I think it went pretty good! I was super shaky out of nervousness and I kinda think it was apparent in my voice, ugh.

Relax, sludge - the interview would have had to be really bad for it to adversely impact your application. Nervousness doesn’t even come close. It would also have to be really good to positively impact your application.

Interviews are helpful to identify those outlier candidates who really aren’t fit to attend College X, and whose negative attributes, for whatever reason, just aren’t readily apparent from their applications.

For the overwhelming majority, the interview just confirms that you’re a nice kid who wants to attend Brown. I’m sure yours accomplished that purpose. :)

I applied to brown ED on Nov. 1st, but still haven’t been contacted for an interview yet. Should I give the admissions office a quick call or email?

mdrm: Sorry, I’m afraid it’s too late for the ED round. Interview write-ups are due on Sunday and admissions is probably closed today.

Oh…thank you, though! I know not being asked for an interview doesn’t really affect your chances of getting in or not…but I really would’ve liked it if I got one.
