Can someone tell me exactly how good Brown Medical School is? I ask because I'm thinking of applying to Brown for the 8 year PLME program. I won't have to take MCATs or apply to med school and will be guaranteed a spot in BMS. Of course, I won't be able to apply anywhere else. I wanted to know whether the quality of and opportunities at Brown Med are worth it, or if I should just apply as a regular undergraduate, take the MCATs, and apply to several medical schools.
It would be bad if I were accepted into the PLME, and then as a senior at Brown, found out I in fact didn't want to go to Brown Medical School, and wanted to go somewhere else instead.

Also, are there any other such programs (like Brown's 8 year PLME) I might want to take a look at?

I can't answer your question about Brown Medical School but I can answer you second question.

There are several 8 year programs, such as Brown PLME, as well as 6- and 7-year programs. From what I remember, here are a few other good programs:

Northwestern University
Boston University
Rice University/Baylor College of Medicine
Baylor University/Baylor College of Medicine
George Washington University
University of California, San Diego (CA residents only)
University of Southern California

AAMC has a full list of the 30 BA/MD programs available in the USA on its website.

I went to Baylor Med, so I would certainly consider Rice/Baylor.

Brown Med is strong, though probably not as elite as Brown undergrad (which is top tier). My recollection is that you are not bound to attend Brown's medical school if you accept their overall proram (ie, if you do very well at Brown undergrad, you can opt out and apply to other schools if you'd like). Having said that, however, I should add that Brown's medical school is good enough to launch you into an elite resiency if that's your aim.

So although Brown Med ranks 40th on the list for med research and 15th for primary care, do you think going to BMS will still be good for getting into top choice residencies? For example, will people associate BMS with Ivy League and therefore consider the Med school also very good?

Instead of doing these expensive programs wouldn't it better to go to an instate school then transfer for med school? You can save tons of money of education which isn't med school.

I didn't go to Brown, but it offers a great opportunity for an undergraduate education. The public/private debate won't be answered here, but, if you fit into the campus, it is a GREAT place.

If you do the combined program, you can quit and apply elsewhere for medical school for a variety of reasons.

Residencies do look at the med school rankings, but they care more for how you perform at the medical school. Brown Med may not be at the highest tier, but it is certainly a respectable school and would serve you well at the next level.
