If you are accpeted to Brown PLME, do you have to go to there medical school?

I was thinking about applying to Brown PLME, but I don’t want to be stuck at the same school for 7 years. I would much rather know that I am definitely going to medical school, but then still have the option of going somewhere else (basically playing it safe).

again, please only answer this question if you are 100% sure you are right.

I don't know what I'm talking about with regards to whether you HAVE to go to Brown for all 7 years, but I DO know that it is not a 7 year program, but an 8 year one. :)

This is an EIGHT year program...If you go there, you are not required to take the MCAT and you just have to maintain a 3.0 while doing whatever major you want. You can however, take the MCAT and go to another school. PLME is a safety net because according to the US statistics nation wide, only about 50-60% of people applying to med school actually get accepted into a med school...that is daunting in itself

You do not have to go to the Brown Med School, but nearly all do. If you take the MCATs, Brown will look at them and consider rescinding your status the same as they would if your GPA is below a 3.0, but I've never heard of that happening.

That being said, you really shouldn't apply if you want to go elsewhere, in my personal opinion. It's one of the things that make the PLME program so ****ty in my mind...

So people have gone to other med schools despite the fact that they have guaranteed acceptance into Brown's med school? Can't imagine why you would do that!

this seems a little extreme...can any (who knows what they're talking about) confirm this?

you'llsee: modestmelody knows what he's talking about. PLME is non-binding. If you don't believe modestmelody then i'm not sure who you would believe. check the website, it's really not super difficult to navigate.

uh yeah, he does know what he is talking about. it's nonbinding. You really haven't done any research on this have you?
crzy2rite, why would they go to another med school? because Brown's med school kinda sucks in comparison to its undergrad. Undergrad is ranked top 15! but med is something like #35 (that's not even as good as OSU). Even if you don't believe in the accuracy of US World news that is an undeniably huge gap. That said, I don't understand the point of PLME. Sure, I believe the statistic mentioned above that only 50% actualy make it into a med school, but anyone who goes to Brown undergrad and does reasonably well will almost certainly get into a med school and likely one much better than the Brown med school. I mean, if you're qualified to get into Brown undergrad, than you're more than qualified for its med school. So if I applied and got into Brown PLME, I would probably not want to go to Brown med school anyway becuase I will have the opportunity (by getting into Brown undergrad) to go to a better med school. That's why, imo, PLME is almost useless.

A big reason Brown's statistics have been low is because until the last couple of years Brown Med School accepted students 99% from PLME, 1% from Dartmouth and that was it. We also have some pretty strict requirements for doctors to become affiliated with the medical school (they HAVE to teach, similar to faculty of the rest of the university) and many doctors who want to do research only/clinical work only that would be associated with the school and bolster its reputation, therefore, are not affiliated with the Brown med school.

That's how it was recently explained to me.

It's also worth noting that the med school did just receive a 100million dollar donation and that Brown's Med School does EXCELLENT placing its students in the top residency/internships whatever it's called in the country and that's really all that matters. Check it out.

I have many issues with PLME, none of which are JohnC's, but that's another story probably not for CC.

if you scroll down just a little bit, it says : "Students who expect to apply to other medical schools should not apply to the PLME, which is an eight-year educational program."

They still let them leave, but like I said, it's not somethign you should apply to if you intend to leave. Mainly because you're an ass if you're taking someone's spot who wants to take advantage of what we're offering for real just for your own comfort, even knowing you're going to go through the med school application process that you would at any other school anyway.
