Brown RISD dual degree program?

Is anyone on CC applying to the Brown/RISD dual degree program this year? I’m a rising senior and I’m thinking of applying. It sounds amazing because I love art, but I wouldn’t want to go to just art school, and Brown is awesome.

And also, if there’s anyone on here who is in this program, could you answer a couple questions?
How has your experience been, and do you feel as much a part of Brown as other students?
Can you study abroad?
Is the five-year thing difficult (financially, or in other ways)? Is it super stressful?
To get into this program, do you have to have a clear cut idea of what you want to do and how you will incorporate these two opportunities, or can you have more of an open mind, simply with a passion for both art and learning?

I know a few students who did this program.

It is a VERY intense program. I doubt you can study abroad. You can barely take advantage of Brown’s curriculum. The students who do it are very directed, dedicated and organized. I think most can articulate a clear vision of how they are going to meld their two courses of study.

Some RISD/Brown students make a real concerted effort to be part of both Brown and RISD. It takes work.

The student I know best who is in it loves it and highly recommends it, but this person is super intense and works incredibly hard.

Thanks, that’s good to know- it does seem like going to either one of these schools would be a really intense experience, let alone both! I’m not sure if that pressure is really for me (on the off-chance that I’d even get in), or if I have a clear enough vision of exactly what I want my future career, etc to be. but on another note, do you know how easy it is for Brown students to take RISD classes, and how many do? Do you know if many students at Brown double-concentrate in visual art and something else, and how stressful that might be in comparison?

It is very easy to take RISD classes while at brown. I believe there is a cap of four courses though (you’ll have to check the brown website). You could look at the visual arts department’s website - they might list how many concentrators they have. It would certainly be easier to be a VA+x concentrator at brown than a brown/RISD combined student.
