lol, I'm a Miami transplant that thinks Atlanta is cold.....I'm gonna die!

weetstreet, I'm from NYC, and I was cold in my fleece and jeans. I think people who are already out in shorts, t-shirts and sandals are crazy. The winter here was rather unremarkable, so don't worry too much.

I'm from the northern Midwest, so I think the weather's pretty mild.

And yes, if you want to get into a course, you will. Except for small writing seminars capped at 18 or 20, it's not hard to just keep showing up, or ask the prof for special permission.

the real issue is that since the weather is so unpredicatable, the heat is still on in a lot of buildings, and so it is ridiculously hot inside. At least the amount of time I spend outside getting to class is short enough that a layer isnt worth it since I will just take it off as soon as I get inside.

The weather in Providence isn't terribly different from that of Philadelphia. Maybe 6-8 degrees shaved off as a general rule.

what are some fun, random classes you can take at Brown? for example...ballroom dancing, yoga, wine tasting, snake charming, swallowing fire...
and i've always wondered if people can learn how to play a new instrument in college too

West African Dance is extremely popular. People are grouped into "families" that I think get very close. Ghanian and Javaneese drumming are also pretty cool. You can learn to play an instrument through private lessons offered through the school as well.

any thoughts about needing a car? thanks!

when I was at Brown ( a long time ago) I had one beginning my sophomore year.

A car is absolutely unnecessary and probably more hassel than it's worth.

Yeah, definitely don't bring a car. You're not allowed to have one freshman year, and most upperclassmen don't have them because parking is a hassle and you can take busses and trains pretty much everywhere.

is the Amtrak station close enough to walk to from Brown? or should i take a taxi?

Its a fifteen minute walk.. its just down the hill... You dont really need to take a taxi..

Only taxi if you have a lot of luggage or something. It's very walkable.

is there anything you guys DON'T like about Brown?

The housing for upper classmen could be a lot better, it's not that it's bad, just that there is significant desparity and even the best housing here is only on par with average housing elsewhere.

The quality of food here isn't great either, managable, but certainly worth complaining about and hoping that that improves.

^^^ Those are also my biggest complaints. As far as academics, social life, professors, students, everything else, I'm perfectly happy.

Yeah, the housing is decent, but not as luxurious as places like Yale and Harvard, or as community-oriented as places like UChicago.

I know Brown isn't ridiculously intense when it comes to varsity sports, but how are the athletics for non-varsity players? Are there any intramural sports and are fitness facilities accessible for everyone?

there are a ton of intramurals.

If you are a real intense weight lifter, you will probably be a bit dissapointed, at least my friend is, if you're a casual lifter, you will be happy.

Oh man I think the food is great! Farmers market and big Ratty breakfasts!!!
