the vast majority of the students i know at brown definitely qualify as geniuses. it's very humbling (and inspiring at the same time).

Does Brown have an active literary magazine?

Can you give any details about the Literary Arts concentration?

What do you like/dislike about Providence?

Do their app. essay topics change regularly? The admissions site says to check in August for the updated app., but I'd really like to know what the questions are so that I can perhaps start brainstorming a bit earlier.

Do you have any insight/comments regarding ED/financial aid? Are they helpful/understanding about issues that aren't evident from pure number-crunching on the forms? I would love to apply ED, but as of now, I'm still not sure whether it would be wise due to financial uncertainties. I know it often depends on individual circumstances, but any general impressions?

Sorry about bombarding you all with questions. Anything you might have to add would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time. :)

runawaywithme -- defniitely just as smart as kids at the other ivies. however, I think that the people who apply to brown value the laid back atmosphere and tend to be of the same philosophy. So we're talking laid-back geniuses, but geniuses nonetheless.

Hi, I'm a high school junior.. I'm just wondering whether or not its better for my chances at Brown if I continue my Spanish courses.. i'm supposed to be taking Spn 5 AP as a senior next year, but I would much rather take Computer Science AP. Does it make a difference which one I take? People had told me that continuity is better so what should I do? (I probably can't take the work load if I take both classes because of other classes, so it's a one-or-the-other kind of situation).

What interests you most? Which is closer to your intended area(s) of concentration? I'd say since they're both AP classes and you've already taken 3 years of Spanish, it doesn't much matter. Take whatever class you feel you'll get most out of (and, ideally, would get a good grade in).

Another thing to consider is placement and credit. If you do well on the Spanish AP (4 or 5) you can earn placement into higher levels of Spanish, as well as credit in Spanish if you complete at least a semester of Spanish at Brown. On the other hand, the Computer Science AP will get you neither placement nor credit here. You can look at other schools you're interested in to see if they'll take either one.

I'm more interested in biology and technology related fields. So whether or not I continue to Spanish 5 AP doesn't really matter to admission to Brown if I were to take CompSci instead (or other schools for that matter I guess)?

I guess I'm not very concerned at the moment about placement and credit.. I just have a lot more interest in Comp Sci then Spanish. -.-

Sounds like the best choice for you would be comp sci, then. :)

whats the social atmosphere at brown?

is there a strong sense of community among the students, or do they part their separate ways when the weekend rolls around?

how is the debate team and orchestra?

how hard is it to transfer into the school. Whats the acceptance rate. What kind of GPA should you have.

My son is a disabled student.. quadriplegic uses a motorized wheelchair.. do you ever see a student like him... if so.. does he/ she appear to "fit In"' ( for lack of a better phrase). As a parent you worry about these things

I know of a blind student and one student in a wheel chair. I am not sure I've seen a quadraplegic however. I feel that the community will be accepting from what I saw with tose students, though it may take a bit more effort to get to know people as some people are shy about those things (or even afraid that that person will just think that they're coming up to them out of sympathy). Brown is generally accessible, and with the elevator renovation in the Ratty this summer I wouldnt for see mobility as too much of a problem. Basically, I am not sure that Brown will be BETTER than other places strictly in this respect, but I do feel it will at least be as accepting and good as other places.

The part that would be hard is getting around in nasty weather (ice or snow on the ground) when having to leave the inner campus. Would your son have an attendant to help him? Not sure how that part works.

The Brown campus is pretty much at the top of a gentle knoll and most of it is within about a 5 block area with good, flat pathways. However, certain department buildings (music, for example) are far flung-- and, at least when I attended, certain classes were held upstairs in 100+ year old non-accessible buildings. Also, some of the vintage sidewalks/curbs in the neighborhood are cobblestone or brick and are also uneven.

There may have been some updating of the buildings in the last 20 years though. I believe you can get note taking services, etc if needed.

Socially, I think your son would be fine, particularly if he is outgoing. Modestmelody is right, people just don't want to look like they're being patronizing, so they hang back. I think Brown kids are pretty friendly and open-minded.

The campus is pretty shabby for an Ivy, isn't it?

Shabby? No. From the outside, the campus is gorgeous -- most of the buildings are genuinely beautiful, and the grounds are very well kept. Some of the classroom buildings are really new and modern on the inside, and some are not. The dorms aren't Harvard and Yale (sorry, no gold leaf on the ceiling or crystal chandeliers), but compared to most schools, they're pretty nice. In terms of accessibility, not every classroom building is completely acessible, but they're working on it, including renovations this summer.

the campus is really beautiful...it stuns me every time i walk through it. i'm starting grad school at harvard in the near future and i don't think the yard is nearly as nice.

some of the most beautiful spaces are actually inside buildings like sayles, the john carter library, alumni center, etc.

yeah, it's not the walkways on campus that are shoddy, it's the sidewalks that are controlled by the city of Providence that are falling apart (coughgeorgestreetcough)

iwannabe_,

You crack me up. :)

hey, dcircle. i just graduated from brown and i'm deferring bms for one year in order to finish a couple fellowships that i received last month. I'm very interested in getting an mph from harvard sometime during my brown med years, but I don't really know much about how to do it. i definitely want to avoid dean ip and some of the other deans for awhile, so i was wondering if you knew about the logistics of getting the mph during the 4 years of medical school. thanks a bunch. (p.s. i tried PMing you but your box was full.)

i'm actually not going for the MPH, but may be able to help anyway. trying PMing again

-How much spending money do you use up there?

-How much does a trip to Boston cost?

-How much free time do you usually have?

-Any health food stores near Brown?

-Is there somewhere I could run or swim to train for outdoor track season?

Thanks!
