Brown Transfer 2012

Hey, just thought I would start a thread for those applying as a transfer student hoping to enter Brown University in the fall of 2012.

Current school: freshman at Washington University in St. Louis

Where are you all applying from? Why do you want to transfer? What are your qualifications?

More about me:

I want to transfer because Washington University in St. Louis does not have a sociology department, which is the subject I want to major in. I also don’t like the social life here. It basically revolves around frats, which get boring, or bars (and I haven’t bought a fake yet, not sure I want to spend the money). The students are pretty boring (although very nice), and many don’t have taste in terms of music or fashion.

Hey!

I am also applying to transfer into Brown this fall.

Current School: A Canadian University (US Citizen in Canada)
Reasons to Transfer: Social life, and lackluster opportunities and academics for my field of interest.

Hey all!

I’m trying to transfer from NYU. I’ve been to summer@Brown twice (once when I was 13 and another time when I was 15) and I really fell in love with the whole ambiance and culture at Brown.

BTW are you guys applying for financial aid? It seems as though Brown is big on that…

Current School: Boston University (Currently a Sophomore)

Why: unsatisfied with campus, academic programs, lack of diverse opportunities available, social scene, etc.

Not sure what you mean/actually want when you ask about our qualifications, please clarify.
I am also applying to Wesleyan, Vassar, Hampshire, and Amherst College.
No I am not applying for financial aid.

Area: East Coast

Yeah, I’m not applying for financial aid.

Litton915—> you should look at Swarthmore. From what I have seen, Wesleyan has the most similar culture to Brown, but without the city. It’s interesting that you’re a legacy at Brown, I wonder if that has any affect on transfer admission?

Portmanteau5 —> What don’t you like about NYU? It’s on my list of schools to apply to, so I would like to hear some negatives about it

yeah the culture at Brown is great. People are really diverse, and there seems to be a lot of quirky people with tastes other than the mainstream. There’s also the ever-popular open curriculum, and RISD of course. Providence is also a great little city, even if it doesn’t have as many concert venues as I’d like.

Where I am applying, in order of how much I want to go there:
Brown, Columbia, Wesleyan, Yale, Harvard, NYU

what I want from a school:
medium sized (anywhere from 2,500-15,000 is fine for me, but around 6,000 is optimal), near a small city (or NY), has an art department, a sociology department, interesting students who don’t just come to class in uggs and talk about nothing, minimal requirments (columbia has everything else but this), is in the north east, and has minimal greeklife. And, obviously, should be excellent academically It’s strange how few schools meet these requirements.

I am also not applying for financial aid; I do not qualify for a dime anyways from Brown now and for the foreseeable future.

Socart, the features you yearn for in a college environment are exactly in line with my own feelings of what constitutes the perfect school.

Socart: have you joined any clubs or organizations? i know that a fair amount of kids from my high school (current sophomores) attend WashU st louis. A bit of advice for your application, (totally unsolicited I know, so take it or leave it, no worries either way) try not to be so negative and emphasize the positive things you have done and hope to achieve at each new college. And I highly do not recommend getting a fake, too much risk, usually not very good quality, not worth the money, and if you’re focused on drinking etc you’re not taking full advantage of whatever your school/city has to offer. Plus, we’re all college students and if you can’t find booze without it, you’re probably not trying hard enough. but like I tell potential students, if you’re going to be dumb, at least be smart about it.

Also you didn’t answer my question from earlier.

Is anyone else going to be sending in a Mid-Term report by any chance?

Yeah, I think Mid-Term reports are required so I’m definitely going to send it in. Hopefully it will be better than my disappointing first semester grades. Quick question, are mid-term reports due March 1 (when the Brown app is due) or when mid-terms take place? My school’s mid-terms start around March 15 and I’m wondering whether I should send it after or before these.

Socart, the social life problem is pretty much my greatest fear about Washu (I’m applying there and I have a feeling that it’ll be the only place I get in). Really hope, for both of our sakes, that you’ll find something else to entertain you! Diversity’s a pretty big deal to me, and I was wondering how diverse washu seems to you (I’m worried that there’ll be a few more rich white kids there than other similar colleges - and sorry for asking a question not related to Brown).

Does Brown require the secondary school report?

mms0915, Brown does require the Secondary School Final Report. It also requires the Mid-Term College Report, a new requirement for this year I believe; two instructor letters of recommendation and College Official Report.

You can look it up on the Brown website for transfer applicants for more information here:
[Transfer Applicants | Undergraduate Admission](<a href=“Undergraduate Admission | Brown University”>Undergraduate Admission | Brown University)

Thanks! My HS wasn’t believing me!

By the way- could someone tell me my chances?

Currently a sophomore in a 4 yr private university. I was a pharmd. D major my first three semesters but changed to biology because I really want to become a doctor (took a big chance there!).

High School-
96.63 gpa weighted/94.4 not weighted- upwards trend
Bad SAT scores- 650/670/650
I do not want to send my ACT scores
6 AP courses, 1 college course and the rest are honors
LOTS OF EC’s- president of clubs, 2 honor societies, basketball, volunteered, drama, etc…

University- St. John’s/ pharmd then biology
GPA- 3.8, downwards because I really wasn’t interested in the courses. One bad grade while others are A’s. The bad grade isnt a science or math course.
Part of many organizations, peer educator, volunteer at a hospital and animal shelter, research, etc…
deans list and other honors

mms0915: I don’t know why people always ask chances. We aren’t admissions directors, so we really have no idea. I’d say you have less of a chance than someone with a 4.0 at a top university, but we really can’t predit. Brown requires the secondary school report. I’ve asked around, and schools are fine with you sending the midterm report after March 1st, they simply want it as soon as it is available.

hopefultotransfer2: It’s technically diverse, I suppose. Some minorities tend to stick together (there’s a group of black girls on my floor who are mostly friends with only black girls), but there is some mixing. It’s definitely nowhere near perfect, but it’s not horrible. There are a lot of very rich kids here (there’s a kid who has a porsche), but for the most part people are not really snobby about money. There are a lot of girls who act kind of pampered, but no one really flaunts their wealth.

Litton915: Yeah. I’ve start a club that I am the president of, and I am in an executive position on another club. I really like both, and they match my interests. I also participate in two other clubs that don’t take up much time. Yeah, I wasn’t negative about the school in my application. There are a lot of great things about it, and I mentioned that. I just talked about how I feel like a minority here because my interests are different from a lot of the kids (music wise, going to frats, etc.) For me getting a fake isn’t about alcohol, it’s more about getting off campus. There’s plenty of alcohol on campus, it’s just that a lot of my friends are now going to bars and so I have nothing to do. St. Louis is a pretty uninteresting city, and all there is to do off campus is go to bars. I’m not sure though, if I’m still here next year (hopefully not), I will probably get one. As for your question earlier (I’m assuming you meant posting qualifications), you got what I meant. I basically meant what school you go to, your grades, your extracurriculars, you academic career in high school, SAT etc. scores, and where you are applying.

Frontium: I feel like a lot of people feel the same way I do, I’m not sure why there aren’t more schools that cater to this.

I guess since I asked everyone else to post stats, I might as well do my own:

Wash U freshman:
GPA: 3.86, deans list. A pretty good mix of classes, social sciences, arts, etc (no science or math really though, but that’s not what I’m interested in)
Extracurrics: President of a club I start, on the exec board of another club as art director, I practice piano on my own time (playing for 10 years, no teacher in college), and I participate in another less rigorous club.

I think I have one great recommendation, and one good (but generic) recommendation.

High school
public high school, 2,000 students. Top 5%,GPA 4.62 weighted (all A’s with a B in one class sophmore year), SAT 2210, 800 Bio SAT2, 750 chem SAT 2, 5’s on 4 AP tests, took10 APs throughout high school. I fenced, was part of a photography club, and did some other clubs less regularly.

I’ve already listed the schools I’m applying to.

I honestly think I have a decent shot at Brown. I have strongly defined academic and social reasons for wanting to transfer there. But, we’ll see. I’m trying not to think about it

^I’m just curious, but how do you know how “good” or “generic” your recommendations are? Did your professors let you read them? PM me if needed.

Also if others are posting stats I might as well do it too, although I’ve made too many chances threads for my own good haha

NYU Sophomore:
GPA: 3.9 W/ the obvious dean’s list. EC: badminton club, economics club, NYU IC, PAKsa, and various internships.

High School:
crappy public high school, 2000 students. I had an 87/100 with 12’s AP’s and a 30 ACT but I’m looking to see if I can retake it for the march date. I did Varsity Wrestling for 4 years, President of Med club, VP of student gov, co-founded SIHC, and did a little community service.

Anyways, I’m really dying to get in haha I really hate it at my current institution.

I guess I will also post my stats up, seeing as we are all want to compare:

Top Canadian University
GPA: 4.0/4.0 First Semester, 3.94/4.0 Projected Second Semester
College EC: Campus Television, UNICEF Canada, Photography Club, Economics Club

High School
Size: Approx 2400 Students, 500 in my graduating class
Grades: 92/100 Cumulative (Ontario Curriculum, so A+); school does not rank, but third highest average out of class.
AP & IB: School did not offer.

Standardized Test Scores:

 1. 33 ACT, 10 Essay. Retaking on February 11.

Extracurricular Activities and Community Service
•Totaled 400 Hours Community Service (Food Banks, Fundraising, Environmental Cleanups, etc) from 2007-Present
•Manager and Webmaster of a band with friends. Band has performed at several local venues, though nothing major. It is more of a fun non-profit venture than anything else. 2010-Present
•Began an off-the-side seasonal business of snow shoveling for my community with a neighborhood friends. Made about $2000 in total. Again, an activity I did more for the enjoyment of benefiting others, and not a serious business activity. Winters of 2008, 2009, 2010
•An “Activity Liaison” (I know, I laughed too when I first heard it) for the Taiwan Economics Affairs Office for a culturally-themed summer camp. Produced a video documenting the week-long event; it was later presented to the Affairs Office as an official record of events. For the summer of 2010.
•A studio operator, segment producer and team coordinator for the school television program. From 2008-2010.
•Member of the city squash team. Nothing really of note, other than versing other players in inter-city matches. From 2009-2011.

Financial Situation:
Family Income Bracket: Approx. 250k.
Applying for Financial Aid?: No.

Everyone seems to have pretty good stats!

Portmaneau5: For the great recommendation, I had lunch with my professor and I felt like I got to know him well throughout the semester as well. I worked really hard in his class, participated a lot, and he understands why I want to transfer. For my other professor, he is really busy currently so he seemed a little reluctant to write me a rec. He thinks I’m a good student, but I don’t know he knows me that well personally so it will be a little generic. Also, would you mind saying what it is you don’t like about NYU? Like I said, I am applying there as well.

Hey Frontium what university are you studying at? 4.0 is very impressive for top Canadian University :D!

Those familiar with universities in Canada probably already surmised my specific school; it is the University of Toronto.

Hopefully the fact that my transcripts show the class averages to be a C+/B- would further convince admission officers of my academic abilities. Canadian universities such as McGill and especially U of Toronto are notorious for grade deflation up until junior year, where averages head into the B to B+ range.
