Brown Transfer 2012

Socart – NYU is a good school, and while I am happy here, I could be so much happier someplace else where there’s a campus culture and a general sense of community. I think Brown could suit my needs better. My biggest problems with NYU are the fact its a decentralized university and that adds to the already non existant community there is here. Anyways, a lot of people from NYU are trying to transfer out with me, so I bet Brown is gonna get 30+ apps just from NYU. The competition is gonna be insane.

Applying to both Brown and NYU is a contradiction in many ways. Both schools view academics in entirely two different ways. NYU has many large classes, minimal student-professor interactions, and while the student body on the whole is intelligent, there’s a huge amount of variance once you’re in class. Maybe half the class shows up to lectures on any given time. While academics are important to the student body, it isn’t MOST important. (Which is ironic because we’re spending almost 60K to come here.) I know I’m probably making sweeping generalizations, and making normative statements, but hey it’s my opinion.

Kinda random, but why do some people say that Brown’s an “easy” school to transfer to (relative to the other Ivies atleast)? I don’t really get it, Brown’s stats aren’t that different, are they?

I’ve never heard that Brown was an “easy” school to transfer to. I do not know why people would say that. Do you know what type of people were saying that? (parents, applicants, students, counselors, people who actually know or people who just say they know things based on hear-say).

I applied to Brown as a transfer student for the Fall 2012 semester. I think my chances are slim to none, but you tell me.

Also applied to:

(Brown University)
Cornell University
Boston University
Syracuse University
Binghamton University

Here are the stats for my first two years of college.

Monroe CC / Onondaga CC
Major: Economics
GPA: 3.6 at Monroe, 4.0 at Onondaga
Credits: 68
Courses: Calculus I, Calculus II, Business Law I, General Chem I, General Psychology, Intro to Literature, Intro to Business, Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Statistics I, Chinese I, Contemporary Global Issues, World History, International Development and Change

High School: GPA ~93
AP: Only took AP English, but scored 4 on exam, so it won’t transfer to Brown
Extra Curriculars: **Music/B: NYSSMA All State '08 and '09, Accepted into All Eastern Music Festival, Percussion Ensemble, Winter Drumline, Field Band, Pit Ensemble, DCA Syracuse Brigadiers Drum and Bugle Corp '08, etc…
Other EC’s: Social Justice Club, Business Club, Debate Club

Std. Tests: ACT Composite (w/ writing): 30

I also studied abroad this year in Southern Mexico. This was heavily incorporated into my application essays, because I want to become a Portfolio Manager, and specialize in Socially Conscious Investing. My time in Mexico was spent studying the effects of NAFTA and the globalization of capitalism, especially on the indigenous population.

My accounting professor and sociology professor (who is also a professor at Cornell) wrote my letters. Both were outstanding.

Does it look like I have a shot?

Thanks!

Socart: I’m applying to transfer to both Brown and WashU St. Louis, social life aside, how do you like the academics?

Does anyone know if we need to re-send SAT scores if we applied last year too?

Found this interesting, especially to us transfers:

[Corporation ups tuition by 3.5 percent - The Brown Daily Herald - Serving the community daily since 1891](http://www.browndailyherald.com/corporation-ups-tuition-by-3-5-percent-1.2699518#.TzsV5lyffII)

Frontium: Interesting. I wonder if this will make it harder for those who applied for financial aid to get it, or if it will decrease the number of transfers they accept?

Hopefultransfer2: Yeah, most schools want you to re-send SATs. It would be helpful if they kept records, but they dont so you have to resend everything.

DinoRawr6: Academically, it’s really really great. I have loved basically all of my teachers, they have been really engaging for the most part, even if the subjects weren’t my favorite. I love my classes even more this semester, I almost never feel bored in class. Mind you, I took rather small classes (30 at largest, 9 at smallest, most were about 16 or so) so you get more of a chance to interact with your professor. The only class you are required to take is Writing I, which is sucks, but whatever. They do have confusing distribution requirements (these things called clusters, and then ones in natural sciences etc, but I haven’t even paid attention to any of this so far, and it’s not really so burdensome). My classes are challening, a tremendous amount of reading. I can’t really tell you about pre-med, since I’m not, but it’s designed to get a lot of people to drop out. If you really want to be pre-med though it’s perfectly doable. But academically it’s really great so if that’s what you care about in a school most of all, then Wash U is a great choice. From the link I posted below, the transfer acceptance rate is low (9%) and that’s for 2010. The stated regular acceptance rate for 2010 is 21%, however the acceptance rate for 2011 was 15%, so I would assume the transfer rate would drop as well. Good luck though.

Mlembo: You seem to have very focused desires and good grades, which are both beneficial. Anything is possible!

In terms of Brown being easy to transfer for the ivys, it is COMPARATIVELY. [Transfer Acceptance Rates at US News Top 50 – The Transfer Book](Transfer Acceptance Rates at US News Top 50 - Transferweb) but that’s not really “easy.” It’s still extremely difficult to get into, even coming from a great school and have great grades. I guess it could be called “easy” because the transfer rate is higher than normal.

Socart: Great to hear about the Washu academics! Actually, I’m pretty sure most schools keep your SAT scores for atleast one year. Washu still has my scores from last year and I don’t need to resend them, but I guess Brown is different.

Can anyone confirm that Brown doesn’t keep SAT scores and we should resend them? (Sorry, I’d just like to save $10 if possible)

Anyone here applying for the RUE program?

Awards, Achievement, and Recognition:

Reasons: my major is math and I am very interested in applied math and statistics. But Vandy does not offer a statistics major nor an applied math major. Moreover, for my secondary major Econ, Vandy does not have a good connection of econ and math. And since I want to start my own enterprise after graduation, Nashville, a small city in the south, cannot provide me with enough international environment and internship/job opportunities.

HI guys im really worried about applying i really want to get in! i am currently a freshman at the University of Vermont my test scores are not great but i have a pretty good GPA do you think i even have a chance?

jedimasterham: I haven’t seen anyone else in this thread applying for RUE, maybe that’s a good thing for you?

psiovana: Seems like you are very clear in what you want, which is a definite advantage. Out of curiosity, what sort of enterprise do you want to create? I think Brown has some sort of entreprenurial program, so that would be a bonus. If it’s connections you want, you should definitely look at colleges in NYC as well (Columbia, for example).

Anthro4387: Why are you applying to transfer?

thelydlu: Once again, we aren’t admissions officers at Brown. We don’t know what they’re looking for. University of Vermont is a good school, who knows?

Is anyone’s application listed as complete? Brown says they are still missing my college transcript/dean’s report, and the deadline is tomorrow. I know I had it sent, it’s just freaking me out that it’s listed as missing.

Socart, when did you submit your application? And how did Brown notify you of your “missing” documents? Is it through BrownID? If so, when did you receive that?

Socart, they expect that those materials will come later. The deadline is mainly for your common ap/supplements. And I don’t think they are very good about updating the BrownID because mine still says I’m missing my college official’s report and I submitted it a couple weeks ago.

I had my high school submit that transcript about 2 weeks before the deadline, and my college transcript like 10 days before the deadline. They didn’t send me a notification saying it was missing, it just still hasn’t come up on the page where you check your application status. Thanks for reassuring me DinoRawr6, all my other stuff is in. I would just probably cry if my application was rejected because they couldn’t find my transcript or something. It seems like they’ll be updating what material they’ve recieved well after the deadline though, which is reassuring.

socart: Aside from the things EVERYONE loves about Brown, (open curriculum, satisfactory/no credit, open-minded student body) I’m applying for the quality of the art program.
