I am applying to Brown University and I’m interested in submitting a music portfolio. However, I was wondering if it had to be a recording of solo repertoire or could be a recording of me playing with my piano trio at a concert.
In case you were wondering, I play the cello.
If you’re going to do the trio recording, I’d include at least a small piece of solo work as well. A good example might be a prelude from one of the Bach suites.
You can call admissions. One of mine called and asked if another Ivy would like her to cue the best 3 minutes and they seemed grateful
In your supplement, include a full music resume, and a couple of letters of recommendation from teachers or directors. Even a concert program is important.
Not really sure Bach would be the best choice.
There is an excellent music forum here on CC if you want to ask more questions.
I mean, I got into Brown 8 years ago using an excerpt from Bach suites as well as a more modern piece. No one’s applying to Brown as a performance major, so the standards aren’t quite as strict as they would be somewhere where you’re going for a BM.
The inclusion of a “more modern” piece was a good idea.
The playing and resume need to be good enough to justify submission. Otherwise the Common App shows what you do in music. I’m sure yours is goo enough, just wanted to say that for others reading this.
