Brown vs. WashU

Committed to WashU after long deliberation; now admitted off of the Brown waitlist. I’ve spent the last few weeks hyping myself up about WashU, I’ve got roommates already, met a lot of people I really like, and I really like the campus. I’m also a CMML scholar, which provides half tuition and offers certain connections within the academic sphere. That said, I’m interested in studying PoliSci (which I feel there is more of an emphasis at Brown) and am thinking the profs/resources/network may be superior there. I also like the emphasis on exploration at Brown versus the pre-professionalism of WashU. I’m not sure yet what my post-college plans are, but will probably involve grad school at some point.

I cannot really tell how the social life compares—I am looking to party and have a good time as well as work hard—nor can I really tell whether Providence or St. Louis will be the better college environment. 3 days to decide; would love to hear from anyone with experience at either college or who has had to make a similar decision.

Is law school is a possibility after graduation? If so, I would take the half tuition scholarship at Wash U. Also, having a named scholarship is likely to open doors to opportunities at Wash U. Political science department there is well-regarded.

We looked at both for my D17. They are similar in academic quality and prestige. Dorms and food at Wash U are better and there is more of a Greek scene. You are correct that Wash U has a more pre-professional vibe. I loved the ready access to the park, the free museums, and the Delmar Loop when we visited as well as easy access into the city by light rail.

Based on what you say, I think Wash U might be the better fit.

Thank you so much for your input!

I can think of N.O. reason not to attend Brown

Half tuition = WUSTL

Brown is amazing - right in the middle of Providence, and has the Watson Institute there which runs the CostsofWar project and so much more. Wash U is great but Brown is outstanding.

Brownnnnnnn :-bd
