Brown???

Hi everyone. I am a 17 year old Hispanic male. I attend one of the most prestigious schools (Berkeley Prep) in Tampa. I have taken 7 honors classes so far and this year I am taking 2 honors and an AP. Please keep in mind that at my high school honors classes are a huge commitment (many are college level courses) and grades are not inflated like they are at many public high schools. Below I have listed only my academic courses. I have taken many electives that are relatively unimportant such as 3 years of Religion, Beginning Guitar etc.

Literature

Math I

Dartmouth is my first choice but I have heard a lot I like about Brown. I have done over 100 hours of community service for at a school in the rougher part of town for academically advanced but poor children who cannot afford a private education. I know two teachers who will write my great recs and I think I have already planned out my essay. Thank you everyone for your time.

As of right now, it's a reach. Because there are AP's in your school, I would suspect that the colleges would higher weight on those than the honors classes, so the lack of AP classes soph and junior year might be a con even if you do have honors classes. You have a lot of leadership in terms of sports. If you get in touch with the coaches at Brown, it would help a lot. The SAT/ACT score isn't impressive for Brown... =/.

Does being Hispanic give me a little bit of a better shot?

Yes, yes it does. You're in, dude. I would be extremely suprised, just based on your current grades, if you weren't admitted.

SAT score is a bit subpar, you should retake if you can.

I disagree that the SAT is that subpar. I am at Brown ('09) with stats not much better than those, not a minority, and my SATs were right on that (770 verbal, 710 math, 710 writing). I think you have a very solid shot, should definitely talk to the coaches and see if you are even good enough to play on a team, write some great essays, and I personally hope that as you learn more about Brown you come to love it as much as most of us who attend do. Good luck on apps, and who knows, maybe I'll be seeing you.
