according to collegeboard.com, Brown’s ACT range is 27-33, which makes no sense given how hard it is to get in. Is this true? If so, would a 30 and 3.87-3.85 UW in hardest classes be decent? I’m still a bit perplexed that this could be the range, and I couldn’t find it on their website either.

Brown also factors a lot of other important stuff like essays/recommendations/and activities into your application. Why should they be uptight about admission scores, when their focus is on education and learning rather than GPA.

This is not to say that scores don't matter.

Yeah, like the person said above me...your ECs, awards, essay, and recs will also play a big role into the admission process. Just because you have an ACT score between 27-33, doesnt gaurentee that your in. Thats just a general idea of what some of the applicants had.

Also, the ACT is submitted by a smaller number of students, so you need to keep that in mind

It actually seems like the relatively small amount of ACT scores submitted would raise the median score, because only applicants with good ACT scores would submit them.

I don't think your claim is valid. Most kids take either SAT or the ACT. And most kids do not have the luxury of choosing which scores to submit.

Hmm. What are your sources for this information? In my experience, students usually take the SAT, and those who do take the ACT submit it if its a good score. The effect would be compounded by the fact that ACT lets you submit only one of your scores, as opposed to the SAT, which sends them all. It seems like it is rare to find 1) a student who only took the ACT or 2) a student who submitted a bad ACT score, relative to his SAT.

I submitted both. ACT was 31 and SAT was 2140.

if i am correct, the ACT is overwhelmingly more popular than the SAT in the midwest, so the ACT average might reflect that... however, i have a feeling that pretty much everyone applying to Brown will have aimed for a high score on both tests. The applicant pool is certainly not a sampling of average testing protocol, I would imagine.
(most of my state-school-headed friends took the SAT once and called it a day).

cl8, remember that an ACT composite score of 32 places you at the 99th percentile. Hence, the ACT score range for Brown should not surprise you.

You can actually get more information regarding this in the Brown Common Data Set.

Your GPA is a little low. what's your class rank?

its definately top 10%, around top 6-7% right now

okay that's good then

rank matters more than the number, usually
