I’ve read that Brown doesn’t put a strong emphasis on language dep or studying overseas programmes. Is it true??
And does Brown support undergraduates students who want to study abroad? I mean financialy… is Brown generous like other top LACs?

Brown doesn’t put emphasis on language in the sense that you’re not required to take a foreign language. With that said, their Liberal Learning Goals highly recommend you gain familiarity with another language. I’ve taken language classes in 4 different departments and been fairly impressed with my progress.

I’ve never considered study abroad because the cost is inhibitive to one in my situation. The cost is technically nothing beyond Brown tuition, but there’s the issue of living costs and transportation that need to be considered. I’m not aware of any additional support for students studying abroad, but I haven’t researched this fully.

From Brown’s Financial Aid page on their web site:

My daughter, and many of her friends declined to spend a semester abroad for reasons other than financial. They didn’t want to miss out on any of their allotted four years at Brown. They felt that they would be able to travel and study after Brown, if they wanted to, but once their four year time period was over, it would be all gone. I totally supported that decision.

I know students on financial aid who studied abroad. My daughter had the same perspective as franglish’s – she stayed at Brown because that’s where she wanted to be. I think the numbers of students studying abroad did drop last year, and it was partly a function of the economy.

One of Brown’s priorities is to have a global impact, to have a student body that is diverse internationally and to have its students study in other countries. So I don’t know where you got your facts – but please share your source because I don’t think it’s accurate.
