I’m an international who is considering applying to Brown as a transfer student. However, I’ll need some financial aid to supplement my family’s contribution to the cost of my education, and Brown states that it has limited financial aid for international transfer students. Should I apply anyway and hope that, on the very slight chance that I’m accepted, I’ll be awarded at least 5000 dollars? Common sense tells me not to bother, but on the other hand, an unrealistic sense of optimism urges me to apply. xD I’d really appreciate your opinions. Thank you. :)

If the reason you would need financial aid is just that your family would not want to pay “extra” for you to go to Brown, then realize that Brown will not “grant the difference”. If you have a true financial need (for instance, you are receiving a charity scholarship where you are currently in school, then there may be some possibility of financial aid.) The only way you will know if you will receive aid is by applying, and doing the financial aid supplement. You can also apply for loans outside of the University system. (private banks etc, but these might be more difficult to get as an international student. (unless your own country banks have these??)) You also may have a lower chance of acceptance if Brown knows you will not come without aid. (not needs blind for transfer or international) so maybe you should look for that extra $5,000 a year (which is small compared to the yearly total, esp with international airfare etc added in.) from another source? Any rich uncles for a loan?

Haha, no rich uncles, unfortunately. xD
The 5000 dollars was a really inaccurate late-night calculation. It turns out my parents can’t afford as much as I originally thought they could. I’ll need somewhere between 20000 and 25000 dollars per year in aid. Should I apply even so? Do international transfer applicants with this much need get accepted nowadays?
