Study Abroad at Brown?

Hello CC people

I posted this in the study abroad thread, and someone suggested that it would be better if I posted it in the Brown thread. So here it goes

I am planning on transfering to Brown in 2012 as a Pol Science or Economics major, and would like to study abroad for a year if I get in. Would this be possible? I have looked at the prospectus and have seen that if all goes well, I will be able to complete the requirements for my major and even make honours in time, so I was wondering if I could spend my Seniour year possibly studying at one of the Brown approved programs in France.

Answers will be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Bump… ???

People here generally do study abroad their junior year. I’m not really sure how the transfer process works with regard to that, so I can’t really say much to that. That said, Brown really encourages students to study abroad, so I’d be surprised if they categorically would not let you.

Some things to consider:
I don’t know if you are planning to transfer as a sophomore, junior or senior??
(wouldn’t be likely to be as a senior, re concentration requirements etc. so assume not that)
Brown requires you to pay full Brown tuition for any semester you are abroad. (and the Brown programs require any other college student using Brown’s program to pay that). To be fair, many other schools are starting to do the same thing, (which is usually higher than the tuition at foreign schools) In addition, the room and board fees are a bit higher than what foreign programs charge in many cases. This can be fine if you are a scholarship student, as then Brown will apply your scholarship to that. (however travel expenses etc can make it still a bit pricey). If you are someone who’s parents are not rich, but don’t get scholarship, semesters abroad are likely to be much more expensive than at Brown, and much more than if Brown would allow you to enroll in other schools programs at their rate and grant you credit.
Another option for you would be to go abroad for a year between where you are, and Brown,(possibly even deferring a year after acceptance if that is possible?) and then petition to hope that Brown might take some of that credit. Just a thought.

I don’t know if you could study abroad for a year. You could probably do a semester. It really depends on which credits of yours transfer to Brown and count toward your concentration. You can find out more about the concentration requirements here:
