Brown's Sociology Major?

Hi, I am interested in applying as an undergraduate sociology major at Brown. Does anybody know more about sociology major at Brown? How are the classes structured, and which career can I possibly pursue after graduation?

To the 2nd question: a Bachelors in Sociology from Brown can lead you to any career that values a liberal arts background (i.e. reading/writing/communicating/synthesizing ideas). However there is no automatic economic “need” for Sociology majors. You’d have to distinguish yourself among other Liberal Arts degree holders. To be blunt, Sociology doesn’t awe many hiring managers.

First place to look for this info is the website for the sociology dept at Brown.

@T26E4 Thank you!

@fireandrain I’ve already checked out Brown’s website but I would like to hear more opinions from students. It’s rather hard for me to figure out how the major is viewed just by going to the department website.

Your original question, and I quote, was, “how are the classes structured and what career can I possibly pursue?” You did not ask how the department was viewed by students.

If you really want to know, call the department, tell them you are an applicant and that you want to talk to one or two sociology concentrators. And then use the info you learn in your application.

@fireandrain I agree that is the best thing to do. I assumed that by asking if anyone knew more about the major, I thought I made it clear that I wanted an opinion from other students. I am definitely going to contact the department. Thank you for your insightful suggestions. :)

By the way, are you an admissions officer or in some ways related to Brown? Your suggestions have been very helpful.

@fireandrain I’ve just read your FAQ thread. I would just like to say that I am very thankful for your putting in your time to answer our questions. I found many answers that were meaningful and helpful, and also your effort into this really cleared many concerns I had with the admissions process.
