*btw incoming freshmen, it's really helpful to sign up for bruin direct because then your financial aid refund gets deposited into your bank account woot woot!

You don’t have to reapply

Thanks for the head up! So the only purpose of bruindirect is to deposit the refund back into your bank account?

^^ thank you!
^yep =] def worth it, otherwise you get a check mailed to you and you have to deposit it yourself(most of the time gets transferred way quicker than the time it would take for it to be mailed to you)

wait can we activate bruindirect during orientation or do we have to mail it in? if we mail it in do we have to have a personal check?

I think you can mail it in, but it’s one of those things where I would personally just go to Murphy and hand it in in person. If you have time during Orientation, that’s probably your best bet.

I believe most people mail it in. Either way, if submit the Bruindirect form in person, you still need to bring in a voided check. How else would they verify you are the owner of the bank account if you didn’t?

i talked to live help on the student financial services website and she told me you DO NOT need to mail a voided check with your authorization form. the check is just in case you fill out your bank acct information wrong, so make sure you fill it all out correctly.

@BoelterHall - they dont need to verify because the name would match the bank acct information. besides, who’d be dumb enough to purposely put someone elses bank acct info when the whole purpose is to receive MONEY. thats like giving away your money to whoevers bank acct info you put in.

You are right

Do people often get refunds? How do those work and what are they for? Why is there a refund system in the first place?

refunds often happen because you either have an extra scholarship given by a ucla alumni donor, or took out more loans than you needed. you use the refund to pay your housing(because its a separate payment from your bar account) and then whatever is left over after paying housing can be used to your heart’s content on anything-in theory to be used on books/supplies or saved for another time.

So if some of my grants/scholarships/federal loans given by UCLA cover more than tuition/fees, they will mail a check to me in that deducted amount(refund basically)? And then in turn, I use that money to pay housing? Basically, all UCLA automatically deducts in tuition then right?
When I apply for loans, the money goes straight to UCLA right? I don’t get it and then write them a check? That’s why I get a personal refund later?
Sorry for so many questions, this is all just REALLY confusing for me
thanks!!!

ok, so ucla directly deducts tuition from your efan amount. when you apply for loans you may be adding to the refund. after ucla deducts your tuition/registration, you will be given the surplus in a refund check, which you deposit into your bank account. you then use that money to pay on housing website using your bank debit card. whatever extra money after the automatic deduction and what you manually pay for your housing for that quarter, you will save for yourself to use it on whatever you want. just beware and save about 100 for the end of the quarter instructional fees that will appear on your bar account(the one that shows your automatically deducted registration/tuition fees)

your refund check is given every quarter to pay for housing. why they do it separately…i dont really know… but bruin direct is helpful because it saves the wait and hassle of depositing your refund check

i never took out loans, but my roommate did, sooooo to be on the safe side, call financial aid office for loan info!!!

Thanks so much!!! not so confused anymore :)
