Brunswick!

Whats it like? how far from the ocean/beach?

It’s such a cute little town. there’s a strip with a bunch of small businesses, like a coffee shop and some restaurants and little stores, if i remember correctly. there are a few consignment shops and hair salons, as well.
it’s really close to the beach. i know that people go for runs down to the ocean sometimes, so i think it’s only a few miles. overall, Brunswick was my favorite college town. It wasn’t run-down like some places are, and the people are so friendly. It also seems very safe, and the town has a good relationship with the college.
hope this helps!

Why thank you Emily i did help! I love my occasional run on the beach are sophs allowed cars?

I think that sophomores can have cars (someone correct me if i’m wrong), but it sounds like a lot of the social life, at least for underclassmen, occurs on campus. so while a car would be a good thing to have, it’s not the end of the world if you didn’t have one, since everything’s pretty confines.
there are also ZipCars, which you can rent for short periods of time through a Bowdoin program. they’re great for people who only need to go grab stuff once in awhile, and i believe that freshmen have access to them, as well.

Freshman aren’t suppose to have cars on campus. There are ways that some people get around this though. I know some freshman who have cars. But the school wont give you a parking permit for a car as a freshman.
All other years are allowed cars.
Anyone can use Zipcar. you just have to sign up for it.
I believe the beach is 2 miles from campus. Its not a far walk/bike ride at all.

My whole adult life I’ve lived in college towns, on the west coast, east coast, and now the midwest. Each time I visit my son in Brunswick I leave thinking he’s the luckiest bloke in the world. Brunswick doesn’t have it all, but it ain’t bad. . .The town adds a lot to the Bowdoin experience and the near by ocean adds even more!

Oh I am glad to hear the beach is only a short walk away! thanks everyone

I’ve heard Brunswick is a town with one of the nicest people in the world!

Brunswick is certainly a charming Maine town, with wonderful architecture, lots of historical New England interest and a great “Maine” Street. It is near the ocean and the beautiful rugged Maine coast, which is one of its attractions. However, nobody should go there expecting a beach to be a short walk away, as some of the recent posts have mentioned. Most of the nearby coast is rocky and craggy, which is typical of Maine, and extremely picturesque, and I would not say it is a “short walk” from the campus, although it would make a lovely long walk (several miles) or a nice bike ride. There are some great sandy beaches within a 45 minute drive: Popham Beach and Reid State Park are both near Bath, also a lovely Maine town with significant historical interest.

Also, very little of the school year is what most people consider beach weather, although the two beaches I mentioned above make lovely desolate winter walks.

I was waiting for some current Bowdoin students to chime in here, but none have come forward so far, so I wanted to set the record straight.

Waterfront (but not beach in the classic sense) is within a very long walk of the campus but serious waterfront activity requires a car. Popham Beach and Reid State Park are within 30 minutes. Much closer to Brunswick are various inlets and bays (like Maquoit Bay and Harpswell Sound) and promontories (Harpswell Neck, Mere Point, Pennelville, etc) and islands (connected by bridges) reaching into those bays - you can reach them very quickly but, practically speaking, a car will generally be required. It is in these inlets and bays where the Bowdoin sailing team would sail and where the rowing club would row (on the New Meados River, which runs into the ocean). There is much ocean beauty that is very accessible from Brunswick.

What is the nearest trail or scenic walking coastal area from Bowdoin? I love sitting and walking along the water, its a great stress reliever for me.
