More questions about life at Bowdoin

What are the winters like?
The town of Brunswick, are there places to eat, coffee shop, bookstore, movies and are they within walking distance of campus?
Do you need a car?
Drugs/Alcohol, how prevalent are they, and how big a part of the social scene?
How is the workload, is it what you would expect from challenging classes, or is it overwhelming?
Any info would be appreciated
Thanks

Cold. Not much worse than regular New England winters though. I'm from Cape Cod MA

Yes.

No. I don't have one on campus. Lots of people have them, though.

They are big if you want them to be big. You can easily avoid them altogether if you want to.

Workload is fairly reasonable. Some weeks are worse than others, but professors are more than willing to help out. It's very manageable. My only advice is to diversify your class schedule as much as possible. Don't take 4 reading intensive courses at once. Balance is key.

I'm originally from Maine so I'm used to the winters, but I still find them cold. Their length is harder to bear than their temperature or snow: they'll often last through the beginning of April.

Brunswick is lovely. It has everything you could need (within walking distance).

I have a car, but I don't think it's necessary. You'll know someone who has one.

Drugs aren't huge but alcohol is a big part of the Bowdoin lifestyle.

I second what KSolow said -- workload is manageable if you can stay organized. Please note that manageable doesn't mean light... you will have a lot of work, but it's all interesting.

not that bad - I'm from Chapel Hill, NC - I agree with jaywalker that the length is the real bummer...

Brunswick is fine - the movie place with mainstream movies is a cab ride/bummed ride away, I wouldn't want to walk it. Good food places though.

You'll definitely know someone with a car.

Drugs are very avoidable if you desire it (mostly pot), and I'll agree with jaywalker again. Alcohol is a major part of every thursday-saturday.

The workload is different because you'll have more free time during the week, so if you manage time well, you won't have very much work at all. But you'll be busy. Jobs, social life, work, it all blends into a very busy life if you want it.
