Bryn Mawr and NYU comparison

I am recently admitted by Bryn Mawr and NYU. Both are good schools which I like so much. I prefer majoring in econ or finance but still okay with other majors like sociology or urban study. Anyone has any idea on the school picking issue? I am so confused and any threads would be welcomed! BTW if current students in BMC or NYU saw this discussion, please, take some time and type your opinion. Really appreciated!

Do you prefer to live in a super large city with an urban campus or lack of a campus, or a gorgeous suburban campus with easy access to city life 15 minutes away by public transportation? How do you feel about all female? (Although there will be guys around from Haverford) Classes will be smaller at Bryn Mawr and you’ll get more personalized attention with the benefit of the Quaker consortium offering a diversity of classes beyond those at Bryn Mawr.

Thanks for your replying. I actually do not have much preference considering the campus surroundings. I think both are pretty good for me. NYU usually connect more with the outside world while BMC is really gorgeous (I visited there once). My main concern is that BMC might have fewer resources considering academic than NYU. BTW for student like me tending to major in econ and finance, NYU probably might be better, while transferring to stern is considerably hard…

You won’t find a finance major per se at Bryn Mawr but majoring in Economics if a very good foundation major for ny finance job. At Bryn Mawr, you can also major at Haverford and the Haverford Econ major is very strong. Having the option to major on either campus, plus take classes at UPenn and Swarthmore, I don’t think you’ll have a shortage of academic resources at your disposal. Stern has a great reputation. Were you accepted into Stern or another part of NYU? Can you attend accepted student days at both schools?

I attend other part of NYU and unfortunately, I am unable to visit the schools on student days (international student). I heard from current students in Bryn Mawr that taking classes at Upenn and Swarthmore is not that easy as we think. Students have to spend almost an hour or more on train in order to take classes in Upenn, and BMC and Swarthmore is also not that close. Only taking classes in Haverford is convenient enough for students in campus.

Students do take classes at UPenn and Swarthmore, but you are right, not as frequently. Typically in their last year or two. As far as Haverford, it is super easy.

Career services & recruiting would clearly be superior at NYU - at least for Stern students. Would you be able to take advantage of those recruiting opportunities even if you’re not in that program?

Though admitted to another program, I still have the chance to internal transfer to stern in junior year.

@doschicos Do you know if many male students come from the other schools to Bryn Mawr? My daughter is thinking of applying there, and I worry about it being an all girls school. She has many male friends in high school who she seems to get along with better sometimes than the girls. I don’t know if she would be happy with just girls around.

I would certainly go to Bryn Mawr over NYU especially if you are coming from overseas. NYU is at least 50% commuter, housing is terrible and the cost of doing all those great things in NY is very substantial.

Bryn Mawr has a nice campus and is close enough to a city for a diversion. The school is known for great facilities, great housing and great food, in addition to great academics.

It is common for people outside NY and international students to have a glowing view of NYU but it is basically optics. In the NY area Princeton, Columbia, Rutgers, Stevens and TCNJ are the best schools.

@cara2kauf - Haverford guys definitely take classes at Bryn Mawr and your daughter can take classes at haverford as well. Additionally, there are many Bi-Co (joint between Haverford and BM) clubs and activities so if she was involved in those she would definitely have interaction with Haverford students as well.

Thanks. Most of the posts on here by Bryn Mawr students seem to say the same. I expect she will make the right choice for her, my two older kids did
