B's and C's aren't death blow

in the trend of recent posts regarding imperfect students attending top schools i though i'd chime in

my freshman year i had 5 B's (out of 8). sophmore i had 2 B's and a C, junior 3 B's, senior 1st semester 4 B's (all others A's)

my UW GPA was 3.5 and W GPA was 4.67 class rank was 49/549 which is nothing compared to most top admits

SAT score was strong point 2330, and I had a lot of EC's

my family had thought any top top school was out of running. as it turned out i got into

Vanderbilt (with $5000 per year)
Emory (with $1500 per year)
Duke
UNC Chapel Hill (with $6000 per year)
Washington U in St. Louis

and was rejected from

Upenn
Harvard

just want to let others know that top schools are NOT impossible to get into. good essays, recs and EC's can compensate for low GPA or SAT.

wow, its amazing how essays can really show much.
im quite happy, bcus i love to write, and have alot to mention about the depths ive been through and the courage in overcoming it.
my e.c. is good too heh
congratz illumin4tus!:)

Yep, as another story.

I had a 3.47/4.02 and was about 66/560, now 42/550 and only got a 30 ACT

Got into Tufts. :) EC's are very important, I'm nationally ranked in debate and wrote good essays...

tyvm nobody. congrats on tufts Duffman!

2 questions about debate:

what event?

are you going to Natl's this year?

I agree. I got into a lot of great schools even though I got tons of B's.

If you post your chances your here and people tell you your GPA will put you out of the running, don't listen. There's much more to a college app than grades.

lol exactly. ppl on these forums put too much emphasis on GPA. and congrats to you too rasberry!

You were in top 10%, that's not a detriment to your application, its just a neutral spot.

But you're correct, so many people think that if you're not top 10 in your class, you ain't gettin' nowhere.

thanks for giving me hope since i've gotten a few b's this year in my advanced classes (but it's only sophomore year, so i can hopefully improve next year)

illumin4tus: I'm going to CFL Nat's for OI, but I'm not going to NFL's (PFD), we dropped and are alternates, despite being state champs, but we didn't put much into it due to the fact that it would've cost us ~$1,500 to go to Dallas, and my partner and I didn't have it.

ohhh thats cool.

i'm going to NFL nat's for foreign extemp. my school district pays for it lol.

^ Yeah, ours pays for "one" nationals, and they pay for CFL's, so NFL's was out for us.

All of those Bs and Cs and you were still in the top 10%, you did not go to a typical high school. I see no surprise in the schools you got into with a 2330, top 10% and good ECs. Realize that at the vast majority of public schools you'd be nowhere near the top 105 with Bs and Cs.

ohh i see what you mean. mine also does the same but no1 from my school goes to CFL's. for us it was between TOC's and NFL nat's and I couldn't go to TOC's

Don't stress out in anything~~!! Get GPA that matches you. Just try your best. Chances are, the colleges that accept you are a right match for you.

Yeah, I just didn't want to go to Kentucky, another PFD team went from our team and a congress kid, but TOC's = boring to be honest, especially for the bs "round-robin" they make PFD.

lol yea, i doubt kentucky would have been fun.

but dallas on the other hand :)
