BS Class of 2021 Thread

Hi there. Yes, it’s been a while. CC was becoming such a huge time suck, so I took a break. And I’m lost in this mew structure! DS is in a similar spot — home since Thanksgiving, and he started 2nd tri classes this morning remotely and will go back to campus this weekend. Rather than a lengthy quarantine in the dorms as they did for out of state kids in the fall, they asked families to observe a “quiet”, close to home period for the latter part of the break, and then they’ll quarantine on campus for a couple of days until they receive all results from the on-campus test they’ll do on arrival (in addition to being tested pre-arrival). DS, too, had a harder time with the few weeks of remote learning they had after Thanksgiving; I think the novelty had worn off, and after being at school for a few months straight, coming home was a bit harder. I think he is ready for college, and I think I’m more emotionally ready too! So we’re easing back into the school routine and also looking forward to DS 2’s hockey season to start up again this week. @buuzn03, is your daughter currently finishing applications, or did she start BS this year? In either case, I hope it’s going well.

DD just completed her applications this past week, except for last minute add-on requirements a few days ago by a few of the schools. Those she submitted last night and she flopped down on the couch exclaiming “I am done. I now feel like I could sleep straight through until M10, I’m so exhausted”. Thanks for remembering her!

Does your DS know where he is going yet? Or is the jury still out, like it is for us? This waiting game is doubly hard this year, since we are doing it for two!!

Hi there (belatedly)! I’m rarely at my computer and I struggle to type a lot on my phone.

Hotchkiss is finishing up the semester virtually this coming week, then they have a month off, and then go back at the end of February, with I believe a repeat of the quarantine procedures they did in August. I think they handled the fall extremely well, although I am aware of disgruntled parents, which I’m also seeing at many schools (prep and college). I think it’s a little unfair – no one knows the BEST way to navigate a global pandemic and they are doing the best they can, intelligently. That’s all I can ask.

As probably many of you know my son went the athletic recruiting route, and he did get into the school where he accepted the coach’s offer and where he applied ED. So with my 3 sons I’ve run the gamut of college application experiences: neither of my older boys got into their ED school; one attended his “safety” (which turned out to be a phenomenal fit) the other got into one of his “reach” schools RD.

Good luck to everybody waiting on decisions. I’ve found that uncertainty creates a fair amount of anxiety, at least for me, so know that the uncertainty will be resolved soon!!

Congrats to your son @cinnamon1212! My son was also accepted ED and recruited (lacrosse), so he is enrolled and getting to know his future teammates and classmates.

I agree about unfair criticism. These school administrations and faculties have worked so tremendously hard, and I think the kids are fortunate to be in school and doing some level of sports and probably closer to normal than any other school format. Salisbury has had no Covid cases; I feel very comfortable. DS is hopefully at the tail end of a few days quarantine in his room while all arrival test results are received, and then things will loosen up a little.

@buuzn03, good luck to your DD! It will be interesting to hear where she goes! And good luck to all the 2021s awaiting acceptances and making decisions! I have really enjoyed hearing about where our IRL friends’ kids are going.

Just checking on my class of 21 peeps. I don’t know how many of you are starting to hear back from colleges…or have your DK call you on a notification day and start talking about anything BUT what the decision was…but know we are keeping our fingers crossed that y’all get the news you want in the next few weeks!

DS is waiting on his top 2 schools to release. He was accepted to his #3 yesterday (Wash U) but without any financial help. So, it looks like that will not be a possibility for us.

GOOD LUCK ALL!

It has been a crazy year+ on so many levels, some of which apply to all of us, and some personal to us as a family. Really looking forward to some normalcy again. Best of luck to all!

Kid has been admitted to a bunch of schools and waiting to hear from the ivies tomorrow. We’re in the midst of the FA appeal process for the schools he’s gotten in to as I was laid off in June 2020 and have yet to find another job. As the numbers come in, he’s declining the higher priced schools…but it will probably be a few weeks until he can actually make a commitment.

Oddly - for this year - he applied to 21 schools and has received either admits or declines, no waitlists.

We have had a similar situation. Many admits to high dollar schools without aid takes them off the list. No WL. Only Yes or No. We are only waiting on Duke this afternoon, but they have already said this year their admit rate is <4%, so I am trying to get DS to figure it all out with what he already has.
He has decided to explore ROTC scholarships (and is kicking himself for not looking at this sooner) for a few of his schools - he would only qualify for a 3 year scholarship, but we would need an almost guarantee that he would be awarded one before he could commit (which I think is pretty far-fetched, but sometimes you need to let them work it all out on their own).

Good luck to all those waiting for either this afternoon or Ivy Day, tomorrow!

Just curious, do you find FA harder to come by in college app than BS?

Umm…actually receiving FA? Maybe, but you don’t get WL or rejected due to FA. They will still accept you and you just have to figure out if you can afford to pay it or if it is worth taking out the loans.
We did not receive as much FA as we did merit scholarships. I think that is a big difference.

DD was either straight yes or no too. No inbetween. She has now committed to college and I’m glad it’s over. She will be going to University of Nebraska Lincoln. I was surprised that was what she chose to be honest, but still happy.

Anyone else have a locked down decision?

I am making a trip to STL to view Wash U campus via the admitted student tour (DS will be on FaceTime)…and it looks like it will come down to the wire for our decision.

Good luck with the decision, and hope you enjoy the tour! Let us know what the final choice ends up being.

What is the etiquette for declining college offers, especially those that awarded merit? TIA

The etiquette is to decline rather than ignore. Declining via clicking the decline button is sufficient.

If someone was particularly helpful in the process, kid can write a note of thanks and share as much or as little of future plans as they choose. But this is over and above.
